Posted - 11 Jan 2007 : 14:58:51 I was playing Baldur's Gate II, and I was considering how the novel didn't go over. In fact, it's fairly safe to say that it crashed, burned, and became a most despised book. There are so many subplots, characters, storylines, and wonderful little quirks to be condensed into 300 pages. It's like trying to fit X-Men into a movie. Ha ha. Well, with this line of thought, I came to the conclusion that Baldur's Gate would make the awesomest comic book! (I know awesomest isn't a word, but I'm too excited to use proper English!) In fact, it's so brilliant that I couldn't be the only one who's thought this...So, has it already been done? And if not, and this is one of those "Ain't gonna happen, nope, not ever, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR ****ING MIND!?" type deals, what are your opinions? |

I am currently in the process of retconning and revising all 9 so far published strips, like unifying page sizes, kicking out metagaming and smoothening dialogues, so if you have any ideas of possible improvements, now is the exact moment to tell me... |

I just enjoyed how the characters interacted in this one (and to me, the characters are "cute", in looks if nothing else). |
Aina Grey |
Posted - 29 Mar 2008 : 16:24:39 I mean, really, RF, whatīs CUTE in all this mental cruelty? (other than Imoen of course, but you canīt *see* that due to the limitations of the style) really, please! tell me what exactly you mean by cute... |

Posted - 28 Mar 2008 : 19:22:28 behold: strip #18! http://www.freewebs.com/lepermessiahtr/str18.jpg in which de mysteriis dom Imoen are bespoken:
this stripīs the last one of the Elminster encounter #1 plot, and actually I wanted to end it in a "propitiating" way, but alas!, sometimes it seems like I donīt write the story but itīs the other way round :-|
plot summary: Elmy takes Im on a trip to some hell or another and threatens to leave her, only to unlock the secrets of her lost memory; for SOME reason he kills her, then (but Iīm NOT doing the South Park bit where one character dies all the time though)
"important" stuff: -)Elminster is (maybe) not too aware of Imoenīs (possible) Bhaalspawn heritage -)Elminster still knows a lot more than he SHOULD know (from reading Imoenīs thoughts) -)Elminster also knows where Imoenīs originally from (he can tell by her slang) but is too "busy" to tell her (or he simply doesnīt want to) -)Imoen speaks Xvart (and that kinda tells something when one considers her behaviour in #13) -)Elminster is acting on behalf of some higher power (but isnīt he always?) -)Imoenīs (Mark 2) hair seems to be *technically* not a part of her body (foreshadowing the most incredible twist ever ) -)itīs been a quite shitty day for Im so far (not the worst of her life though, not even by far ), but in the last but 2 panels she is really really REALLY shattered -)the title is of course a simple anagram of "Imoen" (read her name backwards and think about what "the one" means in "The Matrix")
but some or all of those events/qualities might not be part of the main continuity, so screw you, hypothetical readers |

Posted - 19 Mar 2008 : 21:29:02 I agree to that Abdel really isn't a handsome name, but I simply used it since he is the bhaalspawn protagonist in the novel and he also exists as a DnD character with his own stats and so on.

PS: "And I guess all my chaotic neutral creations is a reflection of my own real life personality." true for me as well...
-Iīm not criticizing you at all for changing stuff, artistic freedom, man
-I donīt know the novel, and how that Abdel guy acts therein, I simply dislike the name (like an American wouldnīt name his son Osama for example, I donīt know which names Swedes dislike, maybe Norwegian or Finnish ones) |

Posted - 19 Mar 2008 : 12:29:21 There might be many details in my comic that upset hardcore DnD fans and Baldur's Gate fans as well.
Though since it is based mostly from gaming experiences and improvisation that is what ye get :)
Though I am not narrow minded and am always open for suggestions.
Yes I know that the name Abdel has a bad sound in many ears since it is connected to the protagonist in the novel.
And I guess all my chaotic neutral creations is a reflection of my own real life personality. |
Aina Grey |
Posted - 19 Mar 2008 : 00:43:18 I see
I mean, "Abdel" (I hate that name so much, sorry) is the son of the god of "murder", not "being murdered"; thatīs why I thought it was a rather strange moment to introduce the heritage thingy when heīs near death (instead of e.g. after killing the ankheg) but after all, there arenīt no rules on WHAT causes prophetic visions
also the presence of ankhegs just outside the Candlekeep walls might be a little bit dubious (I know itīs only a tiny detail), if you consider An Introduction to Candlekeep - by Ed Greenwood (found on the main site); thatīs why I asked which canon you use
oh, so youīre actually a modder, I might try your NPC when "Imoen ToB" is finally out (if ever) and Iīm playing through the whole saga again (canīt wait for that to happen)
PS: are all of your creations CN?
PPS: and the thought of Boo actually participating in a fight is pretty hilarious |

Posted - 18 Mar 2008 : 23:22:07 quote: Originally posted by Aina Grey PPS: @flysoup: why, you can draw thatīs for sure, but why mention The Prophecy in succession of "Abdel" "murdered" - shouldnīt it be the other way round? I also would be interested which "canon" youīre following: only the book, or the game and maybe the mods? the "real" FR?
I am improvising forth the comic day by day with references to my own gaming experiences. I am not following the novel more than using the name Abdel for the protagonist and fragments of his chaotic neutral personality.
Abdel murdered? Are you sure of that yet? I had thoughts about the prophecy text as well, if it works or not. I merely used it for creating a mood before entering........ spolier:
a dream sequence at the next page. I will soon start on that page but am for the moment working with a npc mod and creating alternative portraits for bg, that can be seen here:

Rinonalyrna Fathomlin |
Posted - 18 Mar 2008 : 19:44:23 You're welcome.
I'm aware that contradictory things were being said. But I still didn't like the Elminster scene at the end. That's just my opinion. |
Aina Grey |
Posted - 18 Mar 2008 : 17:07:09 you did realize that "contradicting" events happen in this one?
continuity seems to get severely breached in this one, and thatīs why the most plausible consequence is that some of the events "didnīt" really happen this way (like Imoen killing Elminster and gaining 10+ level-ups at once, which IS possible by the rules though, as far as I can see)
thereīs at least two possible explanations: -) some of the events happen only in somebodyīs imagination -) the events happen in "parallel" material planes which each have slightly different preconditions which influence the way this encounter takes place
(both of the possibilities lead to THE question: WHO is actually telling this story?)
the reason I explain all this stuff: ->only because that guy looks like Elminster, talks like Elminster, and is adressed as Elminster it doesnīt HAVE to be Elminster (and just look at the style in which the "last" Elminster talks...)
the bubbles are to read from the left top side to the right top side, then from the left bottom to the right bottom side
the black background bit was stolen from 8BIT of course (funnily enough even using the same colours did make sense) http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=011003
but whatīs important is: even though this whole strip may be just a bluff, thereīs a lot of crucial information revealed, you just have to tell the lies from the truth this strip introduces one of the main philosophical topics this comic is about: "What is reality?."
I do admit that "things" are handled in a crude and uber-complicated way in my comic, but after all, nobody starts anything being perfect, and I am learning new things every time I do a strip
PS: more than fan fiction
PPS: again, thanks for reading it! |
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin |
Posted - 18 Mar 2008 : 00:39:49 Hmm, that last bit rubbed me the wrong way, mainly because I like Elminster.
Also, once again I found it hard to figure out which order you were supposed to read some of the balloons in (specifically, the ones with the black background). |
Aina Grey |
Posted - 17 Mar 2008 : 23:10:14 countering the threadstealer(just kidding): #17!
http://www.freewebs.com/lepermessiahtr/17.jpg
first of all: because one COULD get the thing wrong: no, I donīt hate Elminster (wait til the next strip and things will be pretty much turned around again ) and one has to take the events that happen in this particular strip cum grano salis
this took more than 20 hours to do and was finished in a straight 13 (!) hours-session, but I really do think it was worth it; after all, itīs FUN to do a comic
thereīs a pretty intense (!) amount of allusions/foreshadowing/quotes/ambiguities in this one
the key to interprete this strip (cause now I have for sure reached a point where things HAVE to be interpreted to follow the story) is as usual the title, and in this case especially the alternative title: "Can I play with madness?"
the last panel should be pretty funny once you get whatīs happening...
PS: of course Iīm willing to actually explain whatīs happening in this strip...
PPS: @flysoup: why, you can draw thatīs for sure, but why mention The Prophecy in succession of "Abdel" "murdered" - shouldnīt it be the other way round? I also would be interested which "canon" youīre following: only the book, or the game and maybe the mods? the "real" FR? |
