Mark Sehestedt, longtime editor (curator?) of Dragonlance and, recently, Eberron ficton, has his first novel out. Read it, join the book club discussion on it, and, most importantly, enjoy it.

The story opens in the woods north of the Lake of Mists (out by Almorel). There's a bit of the Wastes, a new site called Hro'nyewachu, and Winterkeep. No Rasheman at all.

Just a couple of questions about this novel (I am considering picking it up):

- How much of the Unnaproachable East can be "seen" in it? Is it just "wilderness -> Winterkeep" or does the character travels around, let's say in Rashemen and one does actually gets to read bits about Rashemen?

- Where does the main character hail from?

In advance, thanks a lot!

The Frost Folk are the creepy guys that can shoot a blast of cold out of their left eye, and have pale skin and hair.

Ice Folk (yeah, the name is a little too similar) are what you are thinking of, and they match up pretty well with the inhabitants of the Great Glacier, as described in FR 14 Great Glacier.
Ergdusch Posted - 22 Dec 2006 : 09:08:59
Ain't the frost folk discribed in the 3.5 Frostburn sourcebook very much comparable to the earth's inuits (eskimos)?

I started on this book today and so far it is really cool (sorry for the pun, couldn't help it). I hope I can explain this well enough, the writing style is very visual, the pages just come to life. I particularly liked the introduction of the "frost folk," does anyone know if they are an existing subrace? I remember reading about frost dwarves (Frostburn I think) but I can't recall the frost folk.

I'm really looking forward to reading this book but I haven't seen it in any stores here in the UK so far

The Wizards series has been great so far and i'm intrigued to see Mark's work for the first time as an author.

It'll be nice to read a "frosty" novel this winter too...(despite being Englands warmest winter since the 1600's )
ShadowJack Posted - 08 Dec 2006 : 13:25:40
Just picked this book up at my local bookstore. I can not wait to read it after the sample chapter from WotC website. I know it will be a good read when the first chapter leaves me wanting more! I also like his choice of classes so far. A War Wizard, a Raumathar Battlemage, I am intrigued! Now what was a group of War Wizards doing that far east?
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin Posted - 05 Dec 2006 : 19:29:57
OK, I bought this novel today, along with Darkvision (and a non-fiction, non-FR related hardcover by Richard Dawkins ), and it's in my to-read pile. The story hook greatly interests me...I can't remember the last time I read a fantasy novel about a mother's search for her child. That's refreshing.
Ergdusch Posted - 04 Dec 2006 : 18:44:37
IIRC it is not even on the poster map of the FRCS anymore, and not to be found on any of the regional maps in the UE. Apparently the game designers themselves have not looked so far to the East since 1990.

Edit note:
I was incorreect! There has been at least someone that looked at this remote part since 1990, and that very recently. In Dragon #349 (Nov 06 issue) all of the hordelands has been revisited, including the Lake of Mists. I see my error.
Besshalar Posted - 04 Dec 2006 : 18:27:59
Thanks that is so far to the east that I hardly ever look at that part of the maps anyway.

Not much lore is covered of this part of Fearun in the FRCS but you can read about it in the Unapproachable Eastand in the 2nd. Ed. sourcebook The Horde to be found at WotC download site. Amazing how well this works!

Where exactly is the lake of mists I don't have any of my maps about and I can't find a mention in FRCS .

But I still might read them. I'm in the middle of Bloodwalk and I like it. The characters are memorable.

I got my copy wednesday. It's always good news to receive a book 1 or 2 weeks before time...

There is still a lot of books on my "to read" list but I think it will be among the next books I'll read. It seems interesting.

The class books have all been standalone novels.

Will read this book eventually, though I do have other books on my to-read pile I'll probably read first. Still, I'll definitely get around to it.

Ask for it. Some places let it sit in the back room because they see a date, and like Mark said, this is not a strict date, it's just when they expected it to be released.

It will introduce you to an area of the Realms that many of us know little about, but Mark brings to life with vivid strokes of the pen.

I'm thinking Mark's title should read something other than Acolyte, don't you Alaundo?

Official on-sale date is December 5th, but this isn't one of those books with a strict on-sale date. The book is shipping now, and retailers are allowed to shelve it as soon as it hits the stores. That being said, this is the holiday season, and as a former retailer myself, I know that boxes and boxes of books can sit in the back room because employees are swamped helping customers.

I hope everyone likes it, and I look forward to reading everyone's comments.
