Posted - 17 Oct 2006 : 22:59:05 Can I read the Erevis cAle books without having read the Sembia series? Or are they MUST read? I emphasize the must part as I do not have enough money to really purchase that series. For those familiar with Dragonlance, I read the Dhamon Saga before the Dawning of a New Age books and enjoyed them, so take that for what it is worth. |

Posted - 29 Oct 2006 : 02:33:38 Ah, right you are, good Sage. Another Name for Dawn was the one I meant. But since you reminded me of the other one, I just happily re-read it..so thank you for that. |

Concerning the Cale Series...there was a short story in Dragon Magazine about him, too, wasn´t there...that might be "enough background" if you´d happen to own that particular issue...(umm, can someone help me out with the number?)...if I remember right, it´s about his origins.
There were two Cale stories in DRAGON actually. Another Name For Dawn from DRAGON #277 and And All the Sinners Saints from DRAGON #297.

Posted - 29 Oct 2006 : 01:18:23 Okay, I went go buy the first book, but none of the stores near me have it. I did not feel like ordering it then, but I did buy "A Warrior's Journey", the first book in the Ergoth Trilogy for Dragonlance.:)
I will get around to the Cale series soon, I am waiting for all those gift certificates I get at Xmas.:) |

Although the Sembia Series would probably make the read a shade more delightful (with the background knowledge), I think Paul´s novels are so gripping, that you´ll surely enjoy them a lot without having read those. |

Posted - 19 Oct 2006 : 13:11:41 I did too, and I loved them. I must say though that I am ready to pick up the Sembia series when it gets re-released (I kept waiting to find a copy of Black Wolf so I could pick up the whole series). |

I think I will pick the first book up then. It is going to hurt me just to pay for that as I am also hoping to be able to buy some expensive Dragonlance Sourcebooks too. Thanks for the help Sage and Merrikcale.:)

Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 16:08:23 You could always do what I did. Read the first 2 books of the sembia series, wait a while until you save up some more cash and then read the Cale trilogy. My next step is to go back and read the rest of the Sembia series.
Oh and lets not forget Shadowbred :) |

Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 05:03:40 They are, in order:-
- Halls of Stormweather - Shadow's Witness - The Shattered Mask - Black Wolf - Heirs of Prophecy - Sands of the Soul - Lord of Stormweather

No problem. If you do enjoy the Cale books including the Sembian series ones mentioned before, I would grab Black Wolf. I enjoyed that tremendously. |

Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 02:07:09 I pretty much agree with Sage here. I would read them but they are not absolutely necessary. |

Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 01:52:57 Gellion, I didn't mean to dissuade you from reading the Cale books themselves.
You are of course free to read the trilogy without first having read the other books I mentioned. It's just that, the complete-FR-freak part of me usually tends to view answers to these types of questions listing ALL the sources involved. Others can disagree, but I usually prefer to have read all the books involved before I move onto future tales involving the same character or characters. Gold pieces permitting of course...

Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 01:51:15 Sorry about the triple post but the forums are acting wonky and wont let me edit my posts. Anyways, I might get around to reading them eventually, but I wont be able to right now due to money limitations. Okay, one last time, do I REALLY need to read those books before starting on Erevis Cale? I mean, I skipped a whole trilogy of books that gave the entire backstory for Dhamon when I skipped the Dawning of a New Age, and I still enjoyed the Dhamon Saga.
EDIt: It is also a matter of my Barnaes and Noble not having the Sembia books and having the Cale books. I am looking for something to read this weekend. |

Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 01:47:29 Forget it then, I cant afford that many books now. I really dont feel like reading all that now. I will have to choose a different book to read for now. |
The Sage |
Posted - 18 Oct 2006 : 01:28:20 I wouldn't say it is absolutely necessary for you to read the entire "Sembia" series before heading into the Cale books. Though I would say that you should probably read "Resurrection" from Halls of Stormweather and Shadow's Witness, which is part of the "Sembia" series, before you start on the Cale books.
