Ok, so whos your favorite and most hated character(s) from all the FR novels? I dont just mean main characters, just anyone who has appeared in the novels, and in a personality\character sense, not as in how you liked the book itself.

I personally like:

Erevis Cale
Alias
Caledan Caldorian
Artemis Entreri
Bruenor Battlehammer (makes me laugh with his grumpiness)
and yeah ill have to say.....Drizzt Do'Urden

The character which I built up so much hate whilst reading the novel was..... Ghost (from the "Night Masks" novel). He really got to me in a way that i never thought a character from a novel could!

In the "characters you love to hate" category, I'd have to give my nod to Brin from THE YELLOW SILK. He is one of the most unique villians ever to grace the pages of a FR novel. How could you not appreciate an evil halfling crime-lord who holds an entire community in a perpetual grip of terror. Don Basingthwaite did such a good job with this one that I gave in and bought his 2 Ebberon novels. (Haven't read 'em yet).

The son of Triel Baenre, the half-drow half-demon. The name ecapes me now. he's a BASTARD!!!!

Ishi was cool, but no one compares to Kyri.

True. Say, do you remember the issue titled "Who Really Runs the Realms?" where we get to see Kyri in a bikini?

I reread that one last week. Ditto for the Lawyers! issue of AD&D.

Oh, and I'll add one more fave character, this one from the comics:
Kyriani!

What did you think of Ishi Barasume, the Stone Rose?

Editing is possible, but after reading about 15+ books with barely any character development, I would have thought some real meat would have shown up by now.

most certainly, I too have been waiting for more. I think at this point Paul Kemp, IMO is standing out above all others, and cannot wait until his next trilogy.

From what I understand of Drizzt fans, I imagine Roddy would be considered an "unworthy" adversary because he's a mere human without fifteen levels in fighter/rogue/assassin/something glamorous, and nor has he been proclaimed the bestestest swordsman/assassin/something cool-sounding in all of the Realms. Oh, and he doesn't have cool magical gadgets.

That is my feeling, as well.

I agree with the both of you gentlemen,
I'am too a Forgotten Realms fan and think that banking on Drizzit
is ideal and a good way to showcase his talents. His remarkable way of insight is what draws me to his novels. Feelings of being an outkast and his daily struggles with Catti-Brie and Wulfgar keep leading me back to the pages such as a horse to grass.

I wish I could agree. The same plots just get old after awhile. I think the characters have potential, but the author seems almost reluctant to really take a risk and try something new with them. Wulfgar went in a different direction for a while (alcoholic, depressed, alone), but eventually just came back to the person he was before--cheerful, battle-loving barbarian who thinks he loves Catti-brie (never mind the fact that he adopted an innocent child who is totally dependant on him to be a good father!). It was as if all the problems he went through never happened.

I felt kind of unsatisfied with Promise of the Witch-King as well. There was so much potential for some juicy side-plots (remember Ellery?) but the author didn't take that potential anywhere. I feel like that novel was, in a way, half-finished.

I felt the same Way RF. I don't know the why's of why a novel is written the way it is, but I do remember something posted here about ed's novels and the editing that occurs. It seems that sometimes after all of the editing and such that goes on, one is left with a few holes in reading. Spellfire was an example that comes to mind, the newer verion of it specifically filled in some of the originally cut portions.

I concur winterfox, I think there is even more of a divide between those who like or don't like Drizzt, as there is about those who like or dislike Ed's style of writing or his characters. It's crazy IMO, I like them all.

Yes, but most Drizzt fans don't know that. They get the idea that Drizzt is ZOMG teh best evar2!11! swordsman, and Artemis is ZOMG teh badassest assassin!11! And there stops their understanding -- or interest, in general -- of the Realms.

I personally thought Roddy was a unique character in the Drizzt series, and I was really dissapointed when he just 'disappeared' at the end of Sojourn. He isn't dead, and I don't think he'd give up, yet we never hear any mention of him again. He was a brutal villain that could have been expanded on.

I thought he was rather one-dimensional, but then again, most characters in the series are. Roddy was nothing compared to Kierkan Rufo, though, who defied the epitome of pathetic.

Manga is the win. I'm rather glad I grew up on manga and anime long before they became popular in the west and, for that matter, before I ever became acquainted with comics.

Of course, most superpowered characters in comics won't stay dead, and given that's the case, we shouldn't expect one sometimes called Phoenix to do it.

I'd also compare his characters to Jean Grey: repetitive annoyances that just wouldn't stay dead no matter how many times they "seem" to die. And oh, now that I think about it, further paralells can be made, ala the love quadrilaterals that just. Won't. Get. Concluded. (Jean Grey/Scott Summers/Logan/Emma Frost et al -> Drizzt/Wulfgar/Catti-brie/Innovindil.)

Ah, the wonderful nature of commercial entertainment.

ooo, this is fun. i can see its an old post but i'm glad Sarephim brought it up otherwise i might never have seen it.

favorite- i'm going with fflar starbrow melruth. sooooo much potential. never have i gotten so into a character who isn't in the spotlight.

sidenote- i noticed a lot of people put drizzt down as their least favorite because he is getting played out, the "wolverine" of forgotten realms. i agree it would be nice to give him a long deserved break, but i still think he's a great character. mr. salvatore probably is going on the "why change what works" notion with the increasing success and popularity that drizzt is bringing to him and the realms as a whole. i can see why older realms fans would get annoyed with people limiting themselves to r.a. salvatore's works only with so many stories, characters and a myriad of amazing authors to explore. just an observation i guess. pardon my rambling.

I would disagree on this, I am an "older" FR fan, and IMO Drizzt is great, along with just about evey other FR character out there. I do Agree with Wooly, it's more in line with what sells for the powers that be, that dictates what is written or for that matter, not written. I think the Authors, at least the ones who visit this site have other great ideas for realms stories, but are kept in check by the money makers who make the final decisions for books and realms lore.

I don't think it's RAS that's doing that -- it's the people writing the checks that are doing it. It occurs to me that part of the reason he's doing the Artemis/Jarlaxle stories, and part of the reason he's imported characters from the Cleric Quintet, is because he's getting tired of writing Drizzt, too, and wants to run with some other characters. But Wizards is unwilling to let their cash cow go, so we keep getting hammered with Drizzt books.

I like...

Arvin from Lisa Smedman's House of Serpents.
Kerell from same above series.
Tristan from the Moonshae Trilogy.
Danilo
Lirel Benrae
Gromph Benrae

I dislike...

Drizzt (a boring and overdone character)

Bluenose Posted - 03 Feb 2006 : 18:05:11
Likes:

Liriel Baenre. Much more than Drizzt, she’s my model of how a drow who ends up on the surface would be. She combines brilliance, arrogance and ignorance and pulls it off brilliantly.

Danilo Thann. Just fun.

Alias. Mostly because she was the main character in my first FR novel.

Ryld Argith. He’s overshadowed by the other characters a lot of the time, but I like his combination of determination and loyalty, and the fact that he doesn’t have much to say but still makes it relevant.

Bruenor Battlehammer. I like him when he’s behaving as I think a Dwarven king should, so when life knocks him down he gets back up and thumps it. When he’s sulking about the people he’s lost I want to slap him.

Arvin and Karell. My favourite pair of characters, I'm not sure that individually they'd be as much fun.

Mirt. A fat old fool? 2 out of 3 will get you dead. You can believe that he was once Mirt the Merciless.

Giogioni and Cat Wyvernspur. Giogi because he knows he’s inept yet still tries to get things done; Cat just because.

Dislikes:

Alusair Obarskyr. Please someone cast a “Responsible Adult” spell on her.

Artemis Entreri. Goes from being the anti-Drizzt to, well nothing very interesting. A hanger on to a more interesting character.

And almost all the idiot villains from the early novels deserve nothing but contempt, though I suppose TSRs Code of Ethics should be blamed for that.

T0p 5 Favorites in no particular order and I reserve the right to alter it later haha
Cale - Kemp did a great job with him and his internal debates
Alias - excellent series, interesting character and plot
Wyvernspur - Can't recall the correct spelling of the first name I apologize for my ignorance
Pwent - I really liked the concept of him and his crew
Szass Tam - Not sure why i am so fascinated by him but I would love to read more about him

I don't hate them but i get annoyed by them...

Elminster - Where to start? He talks too much. Too powerful (he is a powerful wizard, a chosen of mystra meaning he has god granted powers and friends with the same, has a horde of magic items, his girlfriend is The Simbul, etc). He is always sleeping with someone, that annoys me.

Shandril - I liked Spellfire, no i loved it but I felt the next two novels ruined what i liked about the first novel.

Wulfgar - I liked him at first when Drizzt and him trained together and went out skull bashing together but after his fake death he was ruined

Wulfgar's wife Delly - She was a waste of pages, the only cool thing she did was steal the sword and die.

Regis - Just was never a big fan of him from the beginning.
