My wife is pregnant with our fourth child. When we first found out, we decided that if it is a boy she gets to name it and if it's a girl I get to choose the name. She had the ultra sound and I win. I love the names of the characters in the realms novels and since this is the age of uniqueness in children naming, I would like my baby girl to have a Forgotten Realms name. What do you think I should name my child?

Strangely, Alaundo never appeared on my "Baby Name Listing."

Tethtoril did though.

Emphasis on "old".

First Congra!!!
Everytime I hear the name liriel it reminds me of Shir-el Which in hebrew is god's song.
And if you must know(and you must cause i decided to share thiswith you :) ) Liriel can also be translated to The god's lyrics. But enough of my language... The most importent thing is that your girls is going to be healthy and smart and beautiful... Mazal Tov...

cool, good choice. Did we ever get to find out when the baby is supposed to be born?
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin Posted - 30 Aug 2006 : 05:26:22
Shandril is a pretty name. I'm so happy to hear this.

Impressive. Very impressive.

Hurray! (Hurrah!)
Narnra, Shandril, Alustriel (as evidenced by GenCon encounters), Laeral (ditto), and several Storms . . . Ed's in a way responsible for the names of an increasing number of real-life people.
Which will probably please him no end.
love,
THO

We pronounce it Leer-Ee-uhl. Just like cereal except with an L instead of a C. We pronounce Ryld just like build except with an R instead of a b at the beginning. Of course Elaine would be the definitive source on how to pronounce it.

I always pictured it sounding more like Lih-Ree-Ell. Lih (like lid of a jar), Ree (like reed), Ell (like the name of the letter "L.) But you choose the name because you like the way it sounds when you read it/say it, so that's all that matters.

You know Kajahase . . . that just reminds me of how amazed I am at how well many of our non-english native scribes use the english language, as opposed to how poorly many native-english using posters on many boards (not specifically here at Candlekeep) manage their native tongue.

Myself being a prime example when you consider the syntax of the above sentance would give Yoda whiplash.
Kajehase Posted - 29 May 2006 : 17:27:42
With reservations for my ability to write English phonetically, I've pronounced it LI-Ri-el. But if you want a proper answer you'd better ask Elaine, she should know one would think.

My wife and I named our first daughter Liriel and our son Ryld. We are expecting our third and if it is a girl we are going to go with Danifae and we're not sure if it is a boy, but Valas is a possibility as is Tirumael. Congrats on number 4 and good luck picking a name.

Well met

Some very nice suggestions. I particulary like EytanBernstein's suggestions (not so sure about Qilue though ) and those from "the obsolete".

Keep 'em coming, i'm sure we can help darkcrow make a decision

I agree. Qilue might be a bit out there (sounds somewhat Hawaiian I think), but the rest work just fine.

Malice...hmmm...Miranda-Alice... M.Alice... gotta stop...gotta stop!

touché

Liriel seems a popular choice so far, I liked Isolde too (not just realms fantasy linkage there).

Erik had a good point mentioning Cat, any of the Alias vessels names could work (maybe not Alias).
Cassandra, and Jade are both nice names. I'm sure some scribes know of some of the other Alias vessels I can't call to mind

Congratulations. You could always go with Qilue (Drow Chosen), Brianna (from Twilight Giants), Kehrsyn (the Alabaster Staff), or Thazienne (Sembia series).
Erik Scott de Bie Posted - 25 May 2006 : 04:22:25
Hmm. Let's see. . . how to follow recommendations like Laeral, Robyn, Alustriel (shortened to Lustra, mind), Alassra, Jhessail, Alusair (I knew someone named Alusair once -- a guy, actually), and Narnra. . .

Vierna's got a ring to it.

I've always been partial to Dove.

Innovindil. 'Cuz you know. . .

Catherine -- to shorten to Cat, of Wyvernspur fame.

Not something like Malice. . . she can change her name to that during the high school rebellion phase.

Many congratulations on this gift.

Cheers

I really appreciate all the blessings from each and everyone of you. And thank you for participating in the name game. I definetly will let you all know what my ultimate choose shall be.

BTW, my ex-wife and I had the opposite deal when we had my daughter . . . I got to name the child if it was a boy. Unfortunately I tipped my hat about liking Lord Gunther Uth Wistan in DragonLance, and was preemtively vetoed. So my next choice was Tristan, after the (then) High King of the Moonshaes.

But in the end, we had a girl, and I'm sure she is thrilled that I wasn't the "responsible" parent for naming her. That, and she thinks Tristan is a character from Yugi-Oh . . . ::sigh::

That reminds me of an article in Conquest (I think) back in the days when I used to play magic the gathering.

It had a series of 'which would you rather' questions to determine how much of a hardcore fan you were, just for fun.
One of the questions was would you rather
a) have the five magic symbols tattooed onto your face
b) have your name changed by deed poll to Foratog Von Ass

Don't name her that though

it's obviously a boys name
