Posted - 04 Mar 2003 : 04:18:47 What do you think are the best products to pick up for information on the Realms? I don't mean for gaming, mind you -- as I've said before, I don't game. (Not for lack of a liking, though, I assure you; I just have no group, little time, and no knowledge anyway.) I just want to know what to pick up for greater understanding of people, places, events, races, etc.
I know the Volo's Guides are good for that -- I happen to have Volo's Guide to the North. I also have the first Forgotten Realms Atlas. What else should I pick up? |

Posted - 27 May 2003 : 10:02:24 Bookwyrm, if you ever have need for gaming questions that need answering I would be glad to assist you. Like many hard-core D&D fans I have all editions of the PHB, and the DMG, although I only have the 2e and 3e Monster Manual. Still I will be happy to help out whenever you need some assistance.
Good learning...

They have a few of the products Mumadar mentioned and they are all free downloads. Not as good as a book in your hands, but the price is nice...
Ooo! Freebooksfreebooksfreebooks!
Heh, yeah, I usually prefer the physical version, but I'm not like my father -- while he likes computers, he completely objects to ebooks. Me, well . . . have PDA, will download! Oh, the ease of travel with an ebook. Thanks! |

Posted - 19 Mar 2003 : 12:29:04 It looks like WotC licensed a company called SV Games to sell some of their older products as downloadable files and this company does deal with international customers.
You can find them here: http://www.svgames.com/

Though word of warning to the non-US scribes... unless WotC changed their policy, the electronic downloads for sale are only available for US residents... technically speaking... |

Posted - 16 Mar 2003 : 21:42:15 Héhéhé, i know what you mean, i've got all the wotc products for 3rd edition (except heroes' builder guidebook and psionic handbook) and it's really expensive... but when you love you don't count (french proverb)
And Faiths & Avatars is 2nd edition the 3rd edition equivalent is Faiths & Pantheons. |

Posted - 16 Mar 2003 : 19:16:20 Okay, folks. I just went out to the bookstore, as I finally had the time. For the first time in my life, I looked at the D&D section with an eye to purchase (I had once looked at some of the info when just starting the Realms, but it was all Dwarvish to me ).
Okay, here's the complaint.
30 gold pieces for the Player's Handbook?????? 40 for the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting????????????????
And another thing that was very strange was the pricing difference between the hard- and paperbacks of the same aproximate size. There wasn't one! City of the Spider Queen and the Player's Handbook were both 30 pieces. Usually there's about a 25% difference.
I did buy the Player's Handbook. However, I did stop by a used bookstore (like I said, I prefer those!) and found a copy of Faiths & Avatars for a mere nine gold and five silver. I don't know what edition it is (there's no way to tell, on either book) but since the original price was 25 pieces, I would surmise it was the second.
I, and my money pouch, have newfound simpathy for all you hardcore players. DMs especially. |

Actually once you create your character, which the Players Handbook describes how to do, there really isn't that much to do in a PBeM since the DM does the die-rolling. You just have to explain what your intentions are (and it's done in a novel-like way) and the DM will tell you whether or not you succeed in attacking, making a skill check, or whatever you're doing. I'm fairly new to D&D as well, but thanks to some scribes here who have showed me how to get started (and Mumadar for letting me join his PBeM) I'm having a great time playing. |

If you're looking for some restricted, easy to read through information: I remember that a few years ago, before I started gaming, somebody recommended me a guide to The Forgotten Realms. It's not one of the most detailed books, I guess, but it contains facts and figures of the Realms presented in an entertaining way. It's purpose is really to give you an introduction to the Forgotten Realms. The information is presented through the tales of an adventurer in the party named The Seekers. They travel through all of Faerun (a great part of it, at least.) I don't know if it's very easy to get your hands on this, for it's 2nd edition material, I believe. And I must note that it was a few years ago since I read it. The title just is An Introduction to The Forgotten Realms, if I remember correctly. Maybe this is not at all what you're looking for, but it crossed my mind while reading your post.
Midngiht, you're talking about the Player's Guide to the Forgotten Realms. Its references: PG2 TSR2142
I never read it, but it looks like great |

Have you ever considered Play by E-mail? It doesn't have to take much time, one doesn't have to be intimitately familiar with the rules (the DM will be). It can be a rewarding experience with the right crew to explore the realms in such a way.
Think it over, and maybe even give it a try. I'm sure there are others on the forum here that can support you if needed. |

Posted - 04 Mar 2003 : 09:33:36 The old boxed sets of 2nd edition FR were fantastic! Its a shame that they were put to a stop
Id have to agree on the City of Splendors box and also The North. If youre not too bothered about being smack up to date then the 2nd edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Box is a must! All three have loads of material and were great value for money.
FRCS is my current favorite though....couldnt live without it! |

Posted - 04 Mar 2003 : 09:04:22 Though game accesories, the 2nd edition regional products have most of these tidbits you're looking for.
Lands of Intrigue Empires of the Shining Sea Vilhon Reach Moonshea Moonsea City of Splendors The North etc..
Other products include Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark Cloak and Dagger
If not directly accessible in stores, e-bay or www.hitpointe.com are sources to take a look. |

Well I like you do not have much time to game, however I am fascinated by the information on the Realms.
It is hard to say what is the best information you can get. If you have one of the Volo's guide then I recommend all of the others as they are great. As to the rest it depends on what part of the Realms you are interested in the most. For example, as I mentioned in another post, I have recently picked up the City of Splendors box set, which is a wealth of information and beautiful maps of Waterdeep.
Box sets are great for that type of information, as are the many source books that were written for 2nd Edition.
If you stated what you want to know in particular then I am sure there are many folk on here that can recommend other source books.
