Posted - 09 Apr 2005 : 02:40:02 Greetings, fellow scribes of Candlekeep, I bring with me a question that confounded sages and mages alike for centuries: WHY ARE GOLEMS IMMUNE TO MAGIC???? If wizards create golems, technically, they should be able to kill them. Yet this seems to be not the case. In a fight between a wizard and a golem, the wizard would blast the golem with spells in vain (heck, even the meteor swarm does nothing!), all the while the golem bashes the wizard to a bloody pulp... So how do wizards kill golems? |

Game rule wise, golem's exist as they are so that fighters can actually do something beyond 5th level besides absorb damage while the wizard…erm, hurls blazing death.
Lol My thanks, fellow scribes, for all your outstanding answers (and to think before I only knew to drop a wall of iron on golems or to summon big things to crush that big thing....)
You could summon a dwarf. I hear they like carving rocks. |

A golem is an opportunity for a wizard to really shine. For them to use that 18+ intelligence to do something creative, not just hurl blazing death from behind the fighter.

Wonderful summery there, Furry. Took it right out of my mouth.
Thank you. I did put a bit of thought in that one. |

Bigger golems!
Seriously, just because a golem could ignore most spells, that doesn't prevent the indirect use of spells... TK a large boulder into a golem, it'll be affected. Cast rock to mud on the stone under its feet, it's going to be sinking -- at which point you negate the spell. Cast wall of iron and let it fall over on the golem...
Or neutralize it by dropping it somewhere that it can't affect you. Position yourself on a bridge over a steep ravine, let the golem come after you. When it's on the bridge, destroy the bridge, then either featherfall as the golem plummets, or teleport to safety...
A good spellcaster knows what his spells can do under normal circumstances. A great spellcaster can take advantage of not-normal circumstances. And if you can't effect something something directly, then you must use indirect means. |
