I guess we can anticipate a book full of paragon paths and whatnot. Will this book explain what an eladrin is in FR terms? Will it explain how halflings grew about a foot? What do we think?

Sadly not. However, as good as Lisa's writing is, I will avoid that trilogy and just kinda ignore that fact since I do not intend to adopt very much (if any) of the 4e Realms.

she is excellent author. Unfortunately, the series does have preordained conclusions which only hurt it and it seems kind of forced at the end any way

Well, the way I see it, there were always differences between the core elves. Gray Elves (the FRCS Sun Elves) were highly adept at spellcasting, aloof and distant, while the High Elves (FRCS Moon Elves) always were more earthy, friendly and bow-and-arrowy. The division was already there in the 2nd Ed and 3rd ed, so that is nothing new (not even the name is new). Plus, in the 4e Players Handbook it is written: "Eladrin are cousins to the elves and occasionally called high Elves or gray Elves".

IMO, the "Eladrin" encompass all of the Gray Elves plus an aspect of the High, and the "Elf" encompasses the Wood Elves, plus the remaining aspect of the High. I have no idea where the Wild Elves are hanging nowadays though.

ps: as a side note, they're the perfect description for DLs Silvanesti Elf (Eladrin) and Qualinesti elf (Elf). Perhaps that's another race they modeled after Krynn's finest? =)

EDIT: just corrected some typos.

I seem to recall something about cultural differences within elvendom.

Edit: A good idea if it had been used from the start. Now we'll have yet another it has allways been like that.

Not that I care, not at all.

Yeah about that, how do they explain the sudden disappearance of the other elven races?

The Lady Penitent series also alludes to bad times ahead for Qilue in particular (though of course, there's still one more book to go).

bad times indeed

well, we know the book will write up the genasi and drow as PC races and offer up the Swordmage class

Two things that might help you a little -

They were quick to point out, early on, that the Underdark will now be "much more accessable". I don't see how it wasn't accessable before, but whatever, that was one of their goals for 4e.

The second thing is the HUGE HOLE in the middle of the new maps. A good chunk of the Shaar has collapsed into a massive crater/canyon, and a large part of the Sea of Fallen Stars has poured down into the Glimmersea. I have NO clue how they are going to explain why it stopped pouring into the Underdark (water will ALWAYS travel to the lowest point), but there you have it.

That massive gouge in Toril will now 'open up' a huge section of the Underdark to the races above, which means more interaction, which means seeing more Underdark races (like the Drow) on the surface (and vice-versa).

The Cornmanthor Drow are harder to figure - They were allied with Sembia and the Shades, I believe, according to the last few pages of the GHotR, but were then allied with the Zhents toward the end. Since the Zhents made a treaty with Cormanthor/Myth Drannor, the fate of those thousands of surface Drow was left up in the air.

Maybe they'll migrate to the Hullack, and work with the Eldreth Veluthra in 4e - ya never know; stranger things are happening.

I personally forsee the fall of the Promenade in Skullport, considering hints in The Orc King, and also the fact that the Chosen are being 'done in'. Thats conjecture, but it makes sense - something bad definately happens to Eilistraee's followers.

I'm interested to see how FRCG and FRPG address the drow. Not just the new split (Eladrin - Elf - Drow) but the political fallout of the Spellplague. I haven't stumbled across anything on that yet, has anyone (and can you point me the way)?

I can't imagine the drow surviving the Spellplague without a lot of violence.

"Yo sis, remember me, your cast-off martial brother?" <snicker-snack>

(and apologies to HawkinstheDM for stealing some of his sig)
Markustay Posted - 24 Apr 2008 : 16:30:27
Considering they are 'swamp dwellers' in 4e, if you really need an explanation for your game, just say there was "something in the water".

Eladrins I'll never understand - was it so hard to come up with a new name? Did they need to go and change names that were already assigned to 'other things' (like Dragonborn)?

That shows an incredible lack of creativity on their part, IMHO.

about the picture of halflings in the FRCS: halflings arenīt really THAT small, are they?
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin Posted - 25 Jan 2008 : 16:52:56
Races and Classes explains how halflings "evolved". Around the advent of 3E they became modeled after kender, a race from Dragonlance.
Shilo99 Posted - 25 Jan 2008 : 12:00:30

I agree with Rinonalyrna Fathomlin: 3e halflings were too small & skinny, seemingly modelled after the gelflings (sp?) in The Dark Crystal??? I prefer the classic hobbit style halflings of literature and 1e/2e: plumper, shoeless and 'scampish'.

I still love the pic of two halflings in the 1e Grey Box so much that every halfling PC of mine (OK, both of them) has had the same portrait as the sly rogue-like halfling in that reference.

Halflings being a foot taller isn't a large enough difference (IMO) to worry about.
ShepherdGunn Posted - 23 Jan 2008 : 06:50:09
No, Venger, only on Dark Sun do the halflings eat Soylent Green. :)

Per Rich Baker, Halfling's size increase will be an 'always been there' phenomenon.

Just don't tell Wooly; he'll get offended.

Indeed. I hate that kind of explanation.

Though, to be honest, it is kind of a catch-22. They either leave halflings too small, or they bump them up in size. The former has its pros and cons, obviously, as does the latter. The biggest con of the latter is explaining it -- and it really is hard to come up with a reasonable explanation for why an entire race suddenly got taller. The Thunder Blessing worked for dwarven birthrates (and could have covered magic use, if they'd cared to explain that change), but even divine intervention doesn't really cover a dramatic size increase.

So, while I will rail against most "it's always been that way" explanations, I'll let this one slide.

I imagine the FR Campaign Guide and the FR Player's Guide will explain how the terminology applies to elves in the Realms.
SirUrza Posted - 22 Jan 2008 : 23:14:19
I'll keep my fingers crossed that elves don't change in the Realms.
Shilo99 Posted - 22 Jan 2008 : 12:23:09

> must say that the whole eladrin/elves thing is the most inexplicable change in the entire 4e program.

The designers wanted to split the two at-times ill-fitting, even opposing standings of elves: happy guys dwelling in the trees & handy with a bow -vs- haughty, overly-cultured, magic-heavy elves.

I've personally always been happy the way they were (though like the idea of moon elves having sun elves sub-racial personality & vice versa: seems to fit better), but I guess they needed to simplify things for the 'new' audience...?

We'll have to wait for the 4E FRCS division of elves I guess...

Daniel Posted - 12 Jan 2008 : 01:41:58
I must say that the whole eladrin/elves thing is the most inexplicable change in the entire 4e program. I can understand the most of the changes, and even like most of the ones I have heard about, but I can think of no good reason to completely change an entire core race from a lore standpoint. I sincerely hope this change does not come to the realms.

They didn't wear pants before????

It's widely known that Corkitron Allinamuck of Halflings, Inc, was inspired by Donald Duck. *nods sagely*

See, they get to be a major race in a single trilogy of movies, and it all goes straight to their... umm... feet?
