Posted - 15 Oct 2007 : 19:30:35 So, with the advent of 4e, I should soon be able to finish my collection of 3e Realms supplements. After that, I was thinking about starting to collect 2e (or before) Realms supplements, so I thought I would ask you guys who have been playing/GMing in the Realms for awhile now which ones were your favorites. I have quite a few 2e books in PDF, but I have trouble concentrating on reading them on the computer, so I want to buy some print editions.
Thanks, Hawkins |

Posted - 22 Jan 2008 : 12:35:33 The 2e gods books are awesome. Faiths & Avatars is simply the best FRPG book ever written.
Volo's guide rock! Sure, there's filler (the crazy recipes!) but so much lore on such small places (and you can reuse much of it in multiple locations).
You get plety of use from the Forgotten Realms adventure, even now, because of the city descriptions (as I think another poster mentioned)...almost as good as the amazing city shots in the Old Grey Box, several orders of magnitude better than the tripe in most 2e books.
I liked the Harper book, although it was a little different to how I DM'd Harpers.
Adventures: Ruins of Waterdeep in heaps detailed (though you may as well get the 3.5e version: the latter is based heavily on the former, but shorter). Ruins of Myth Drannor has some great stuff, though I always placed the adventures them elsewhere. For adventrues the way would run them (I think) look for Halls of the High King & Haunted Halls of Eveingstar. Old school!
And finally, the original FR1 is the finest example of just how much usable information you could pack into 64 pages (its a shame 2e didn't follow its lead). Amazingly well done by Ed. |

Posted - 16 Dec 2007 : 10:20:07 Let me reiterate, if you haven't gotten it already ... Cloak and Dagger. It's thick with lore and a real pager turner, if I do say so myself (having read it cover to cover). |

Hmm, can you print out stuff you download? I know it's not the same as a book, but it might save you some money, if that's a concern.
Its not the same. But as Wooly advised me, its a good way to screen the item to see if you do like it. |

Posted - 24 Oct 2007 : 18:32:06 Now I am wishing that I had picked up Forgotten Realms Adventures when I saw it for 7.00 USD in my local used book store. I think that it and Cloak and Dagger will be the first two I grab. I have had burning questions about the Manshoon Wars since I bought the 3e FRCS. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. |

Posted - 18 Oct 2007 : 20:35:22 IMHO there is a lot of great material but, even for the lack of details in 3e, I suggest
Volo's guide to the sword coast and Forgotten Realms Adventures for the cities
Empires of the Shining Sea and Lands of Intrigue (great boxed sets, some of the best ever) |

nobleknight.com is also good and he ships internationally. I've done biz with him for years and sent many customers his way, even if he didn't know it.

Agreed, nobleknight.com is a great place to shop.
I've checked them out before too. I just wish that the Stronghold Builder's Guide wasn't so expensive even used. |

I really hate doing that. I think I will just start looking for them on Amazon, eBay and StudentShopper.

Posted - 16 Oct 2007 : 16:23:53 Just for pure enjoyment (curling up on the couch for a read, as you mentioned) I would suggest Hall of Heroes, Villian's Lorebook, and Heroes' Lorebook. |

Posted - 16 Oct 2007 : 10:12:22 I just pointed out the really really good ones amongst those downloads ;-)
BTW, the Hellgate Keep adventure is also quite good, shedding some light on the Dlardrageths and Kaanyr Vhok and Aliisza. |

Before you start buying, check the download section of the Wizards ...
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads
... for really good freebies such as
- Cormanthyr - Empire of Elves - The Fall of Myth Drannor - Calimport - Lands of Intrigue - Vilhon Reach - Villains' Lorebook - The Cult of the Dragon - For Duty & Deity (Freeing Waukeen from Grazz't in Planescape-ish fashion)) - The North - various Volo's too
Cloak & Dagger, Skullport, the Spellbound and the Menzoberranzan box maybe? And, of course, Ed's very own The Drow of the Underdark plus Drizzt do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark.
As I mentioned in the first post (though not in explicit terms), I have downloaded all the free 2e Realms products. I also went and bought the PDF of the Kara-Tur campaign setting. But trying to read them on a computer doesn't work for me. It is fine for referencing materials when concocting an adventure, but not so good for curling up on the couch for a read. Thanks for your other suggestions though. |

All of them, duh!
But, if you're going on a smaller budget, then I'll echo Kuje, and add Cloak & Dagger.
That sounds like a good start. Thanks for everyone's input. |

Posted - 15 Oct 2007 : 20:03:05 The Gray Box Set so you can see the Realms as they were originally envisioned before mass marketing. I would also recommend the trail map for its uniqueness and FR2 The Moonshaes, since I do not believe that region has been updated in a stand alone since 1st edition. |

Posted - 15 Oct 2007 : 20:01:21 In addition to those Kuje mentioned. The Forgotten Realms adventure book is great, the priest info is repeated in the deity books, but the city information and spells are great. Both the 1ed and 2ed. campaign settings, and the Dwarven deep book are clear choices.
I could go on and on about this you know. The Shining South, Anauroch, Lands of Intrigue, Elves of Evermeet... You get the idea. |

Posted - 15 Oct 2007 : 19:43:47 The deity trilogy, Faiths & Avatars, Powers & Pantheons, Demihuman Deities, is a must for me, except, well, a lot of that lore will probably be even more dated come 4e.
The Volo's Guides are also a must. |
