Anyways, I have read up to this point so far and am happy the story took the 100 year time jump. What happened during the spellplague was covered in book 2 and it is time for stories to take place in this new time period and this book adapts to it easily (since undead characters are easy to keep alive...uhm...unalive...for that long)

I've nothing against the time jump. Except the one thing that's left to the readers' imagination: how exactly did Malark manage to become a Red Wizard of formidable power?!

One big thing that has been bothering me. All of the magic users seem to be opperating as they had 100 years prior...the ones that survived. Isn't magic changed in a very fundemental way? I feel this should be reflected upon by some of the characters who survived the past 100 years. They should be lamenting about how they had to relearn their magic.....and it still wasn't the same. Anyways, I'm being nitpcky but it just stuck out for me. Still a good book though and I can't wait untill I get to the ending.

I'm pretty sure they had their moments of 'relearning' their magic. But Richard must have simply skipped that part (judging it to be inconsequential or something) and moved to the time when they once again had full grasp of their magic.

Yes, in correspondence with the shift to 4e. But don't worry, it's not as bad as it sounds. All the main characters are still there, no one important has died.

Ah, the benefits of Undead characters.

Bareris did defeat it with some type of song (IIRC he poured all his sorrow of the last ten years into it) and was transformed in the process. Quite handy to be undead and not be affected by holy energy

Well, there are critters like the Deathless (from Book of Exalted Deeds) and something similar from the Eberron setting. They are 'good' undead; I'd like to retcon archliches and baelnorn as deathless.

Not a bad start. I've enjoyed the changes in Aoth, Baeris, and Malark over the 100 year jump. I was worried about the jump forward in time, but so far it seems to be working for these characters.

And how handy that all the main characters have survived the 100 years through magical means or their undead nature. Now, when we just apply that to all the characters of 14th century DR and just forget about the multiverse redefining itself, etc. etc, all would be fine...
wouldn't it?

Did something happen to Bareis that I'm not catching onto yet?

When he threw Aoth his spear it says "undeath has bleached his skin and hair white as bone and turned his eyes to ink black pits"

Is Bareis is an Undead Bard now, where did I miss that?

It happened on the flight from thay, when he entered the undead..hmm not sure what it was called......but it did turn him into undead and I am sure someone here will remember the exact details.

Interesting to see that Malark has spent the last 100 years studying magic under Zsass Tam's hand and has come to be regarded as his friend. I can't wait to see what mischief he is planning that required him to duplicate himself. Although it's likely he is playing into Zsass's plans, since he was the one who taught him that spell. The only thing I have trouble with is that Samas is still alive, I wood have thought Nevron would have tired of him long ago and did him in!

A couple good things about the time jump is: magic works right again, Aoth has an awesome army that he commands, and well.. okay those are the only two things I can think of right now.

Unholy is 100 years after book 2
Oriac Posted - 07 Feb 2009 : 18:20:27
I don't remember if it's in chapter four or five, but I really love how Aoth confronts the council and basically tells them it's his way or the highway, sorta.
