For everyone that might be interesting in 4e, but laments the current lack of Barbarians, Bards, Monks, Illusionists, Druids, Half-orcs, PC gnomes, and more Tolkien-esque halflings, the Advanced Player's Guide from Expeditious Retreat Press has come out:

http://www.xrpshop.citymax.com/catalog/item/6436256/6268163.htm

Apparently Nature Priests (Druids) are divine controllers, Spellbinders (illusionists) are arcane controllers, Troubadours (bards) are arcane leaders, Martial Artists (monks) are divine strikers, and savage warriors (barbarians) are martial defenders.

Its interesting to see a few more controllers on the scene, since wizards are pretty much it in that regard currently.

-The d20 Modern game already did this, with, instead of true 'classes', you get 'Charismatic Heroes', 'Strong Heroes', 'Dexterous Heroes', and so on.

In between my day job, 2nd masters program, and a small amount of time eating and sleeping.

Or you could by the book I wrote for Goodman Games called Forgotten Heroes: Fang, Fist, and Song. It features the barbarian, monk, druid, and bard with a backdrop of an apocalypse. You can preview it here http://www.goodman-games.com/4400preview.html, including a preview of the druid. It's currently available in PDF on several sites and comes out in print later this month.
Ahem. Not just you, Mister Man...

Amended.

Regarding the preview of the druid:
- pg. 42: You say "Choose one of the following species for your animal companion." but then fail to add the list. The "list" is given on page 43 under the "Summon Animal Companion" class feature, but that isnt really clear from the words chosen on page 42. Also keeping the list down to three choices is a bit bad, because it really puts too much emphasis on "the DM could allow other choices"; it might as well have said "any animal".
- pg. 43: Why Bloodhound wildshape? Bloodhounds are trained (= unnatural) animals. I always liked to wildshape into a Wolf, but since that is a natural animal it should have been listed instead of the Bloodhound.
- pg. 43: Does a cougar wildshape with dragonscales sound natural? Not to me.
- pg. 43: Doesnt a power of "Summon Animal Companion" sound odd? Shouldnt a druid find an animal companion in his surrounding natural area instead of "plucking it from somewhere"? Thats just like a conjurer.
- pg. 49: "the treant lasts" sounds a bit like the druid is creating it and not like he is asking nature to help him. Also: treants cover only 1 square?
- pg. 49: I never would have thought druids were masters of illusions, yet three of the level 6 daily powers are illusions. I would have thought they wouldnt bother with "fakes" and do "the real thing" (especially that wall of heat sounds odd as an illusion).
- No healing powers? No "bless the crops" powers? More or less all powers either deal damage, summon some monster or are movement powers: pretty boring, but I think thats the same for all classes now.

That was a major thing for me, too. I decide what role I want to play, and then I pick a class to make that role work. And while some classes tend primarily towards specific roles, the right combination of class and skills (proficiencies, feats, kits, PrCs, whatever) can make just about any class work for just about any role.

I don't want my role dictated to me, and in my opinion, making role entirely dependent on class takes away possibilities.

Why need roles? Isn't every class basically the same in 4E?
I mean, I see no real difference between a fighter and wizard.

As much as I love Paizo (and it's a close second behind my Realms), I would never, ever call their boards 'sane'.
Purple Dragon Knight Posted - 18 Oct 2008 : 06:05:30
Man... 4$ Realmz and D&D are truly, completely and utterly pathetic.

I can't even stand to read these threads any longer.

Sorry... bowing out for a few days... taking a "sanity retreat" in the Paizo boards.

Sorry guys...

Ahh, but there won't be any differences in the races since everyone will 'complain' about how unbalanced Eladrin are vs Halflings.

A 'booklet' at a book price.

Still, I'm glad to see other companies are attempting to finish WotC's incomplete system.

I at first read that as Martial Artists (Monks) are Divine Stinkers.
GRYPHON Posted - 07 Oct 2008 : 14:51:40
Seems a bit over priced for the amount of pages.
