Posted - 10 Jul 2006 : 23:04:41 I'm wondering who has plans to go to Gencon Indy 2006? It's only a month away and so I've finally got around to making a thread about it.
I'm also wondering if any of you want to meet or get together and have a Candlekeep group that can pester Ed and the others that are going to be there.... :) If anyone is interested in doing so, drop a reply in this thread or send private replies.
My own plans have me arriving on Thur's and leaving on Monday. Forgot to add that my room is at the Hilton Indy, or I hope it is at least. Here's a list of some of the events. (My thanks to Elaine for posting these, I hope that she doesn't mind that I snagged them from her. :))

Posted - 24 Aug 2006 : 02:09:28 I can personally say a 2 year old for a day would be OK but you will not get to participate fully in anything (speaking from personal experience - I only did one day on Sat). I would think an 11 year old would do OK with the right events picked out.
I second the Childrens' Museum as a must see. A family membership was the best buy we made. I usually take the kid there every couple of weeks. You will not see everything in one visit and their is tons of hands on stuff.
All in all, with admission, parking, eating out and buying stuff in the dealer room, the boy and I ended up dropping a little over $200 for that one day. Hard to imagine but I knew what I wanted before I got there.
If the wife is ameniable, I may be able to offer floor space for some of you at my home next year to save the cost of hotel. Downside is I live a little over 10 miles away from the convention center.

Just a suggestion you can use to keep the kiddo abou? :P
But seriously, there where tons more of kids/babies there then I would have thought, and the entire time me and Kuje only heard one kid (a baby) go off, which was surpring considering how packed/noisy it was. But alot of the kids looked like they where interested in everything and what have you.
Edit: And you've got the Indianapolis Zoo not terribly far away, and the Indianapolos Children Mueseum, said to be the best childrens museum in the world. Has tons of stuff in a, a merry-go-round, coupld of slides, huge glass artwork when you first walk in now, tons of stuff. Like Egyptian stuff, dino stuff (where you can move dust and discover dino fossils lol).
Great point! We just went to the childrens museum last month, its great got a membership to save $ we go so often.
My daughters favorites are the Authrntic Egyptian Mummy and the new dinosaur species they discovered and named. DracoRex Hogwartsia( That is its actual scirntific name!). It is very cool, its skull has many ridges and small horns. It looks closer to a Dragon than any other known Dinosaur species.
Check it out! First link is pictures, you gotta check out the last picture at the bottom! It is very detailed if you click on that pic.(Then tell me Dragons aren't real!) Second link is press release with general info.

Eytan, may I ask where in Poland? I have friends in Krakow.
Sure. I'll be teachng ESL in a small city in Northeastern Poland called Olsztyn. It's quite far from Krakow from what I can ascertain. I'd still be happy to make the connections because I do plan to do a lot of travel in Poland and throughout Europe. If anyone wants to get together, or house a starving game designer for a few days, that would be more than welcome. |

I'm so tempted to start swaying her RPG choice to the Realms as well.

That's what I'm thinking.
Though she's more likely to get tired and grumpy before an older child.

Posted - 23 Aug 2006 : 06:11:53 Well there were a few kids to babies there, if I recall right. A 11 year old shouldn't be an issue to much depending on what parts of the Center you are in. Just keep watch on her if you are in the dealer's room because it's packed.
Felt like bumper cars on Saturday.

I cannot, at this point, say with any certainty that I will be there next year. I can say that I will definitely make every effort between now and the next Gen Con to ensure it becomes possible for me to attend.
*waggling his fingers a bit in your general direction* Now how did that funny voice go.....oh yes,
GenCon attend next year you must
It's definitely a priority... but, unfortunately, work and my family must always be my first consideration. The Lady K and I would love to attend GenCon, but little Narnra's comfort and safety must be considered first.

Good question, my girl will be 11 next year and I am strongly considering bringing her 1 day, but im not sure either. Alot of my question on that issue though, revolves around never going to a Gen Con before. Not sure what to expect!

It should work out fine provided no more legal actions involving my ex wife come up . . . but that is another another tale . . . when I know for sure I'll definately say so, as I think it would be great to get even more of us scribes together next year. |

I can almost guarantee I will be back. I've gone the last 3 years and it's a very important source of networking for designers. The only thing that might get in the way of that is the possibility that I might still be in Poland then. |

I just hope that next year Con there are things that we can do besides gaming after the Event Hall closes next year.
Hello-
As odd as it may seem - I did not actual 'gaming' while at the con. I was a dealers room junkie, plus I attended several seminars. After the Exhibit Hall closed - I found several fun things to do! The Auction room was open quite late - and the Auction Store was there - waiting for me to find a few tidbits of things to buy. Most of the prices were quite good. I also like watching the auction sometimes - to see how much some people spend on some of the items for sale! Dice bags for $150? Yup. (It was for charity at the moment - and it had original Easley art on it, done - I beleive - just for the auction.)
Then - there was the miniatures room. While I dont play Battletech, etc, etc. I have dabbled in the D&D Minis beyond their RP value, and just looking at some of the dioramas and whatnot were truly neat! One of them had a modern-like city set up, with a big mushroom cloud in one corner - complete with some burning buildings, and partially cruched buildings etc.
I briefly poked my head in the Lan room - and while it looked like it would be a lot of fun - it was crowded. However - if y ou were there even later than I - it might have thinned out.
So - there are some other things to do. Not necessarilly a lot - but they are there. :)

That is why I think Eytan's idea is so good. If we had an official room ,we would always have a place to go and have something to do.

It doesn't need to be much more than "Candlekeep Celebration." They will assign it to a room, then everyone will be in one place. Everyone can leave after that, but at least people won't miss each other.

It didn't suck, though it wasn't much of a vacation due to the chaos of the convention.
Still, for my money's worth, I'm getting that jacuzzi in the room again, if only because it's good on the muscles and you don't have to share it with anyone you don't wish to (unlike public jacuzzis by the pool).

Least the Hilton has a jacuzzi as well, so I guess between the puter lab and that pool and the jacuzzi, the walk to and from the Con Center wasn't that bad. :)
Did they have a nice arcade, too?
