Ummm...what's up with the fu-man-chu wearing drow in 2E???

Which is not the only place I have seen that style facial hair on the drow. Ever played Champions of Norath?

Who was responsible for that travesty anyway? They should be flogged!

One of the good drow (that commander) has a mustache as well. :/

I believe it is thanks to that picture that the old male drow elf models in Neverwinter Nights had those ridiculous mustaches.

I have not actually seen that picture yet (!) so I can't say for sure, but I've heard that "mustache" is really just smoke that looks like a mustache. *shrug*

I try not to really on art too much. Remember the Dweomerkeeper of Mystra in F&P who, for no apparent reason, looks like an elf? Even though elves can't be Dweomerkeepers, according to that very book? People told me "Oh, he shapechanged!" but the hell? Why not just draw a picture of a troll then?

The most classic picture of an elf with facial hair is the Drow in the Complete Book of Elves... not only is it huge, but you know that guy takes time grooming it. I'm telling you, Drow are vain!

I've read from holy books of Tolkien that atleast Cirdan the Shipwright had a small moustache.I don't remember if this is in the final works or one of the earlier writings, that didn't go to the final works.

Normally, I would agree.

Although considering what Ed has said, I would probably allow elves with facial hair in my campaigns if I felt that such an aspect would add to the character of a particular elven NPC that the party may be interacting with.

"There, that demon over there . . . yes, the one with the tall hat and the moustache. What do you suppose his true name is?"

"Oh him? That Tex . . . "

HA! I just had the greatest picture in my mind of a handle-bar mustache wearing demon....Thats rich!

I did have a theory at one time that perhaps drow might be slightly more prone to facial hair due to the demonic blood WAY back in their lineage, but thats only wild speculation. I know of course that some elves can, but its not common, and as was pointed out, that mustachioed drow from 2e kept popping up over and over again, lol.

As I said, Krynnish elves (and by these I mean Silvanesti elves) cannot grow beards, but they can form wisps of fine facial hair, as was the case with Loralon.

There's been some limited speculation that some male Qualinesti elves (due to the fact that there is human blood in their ancestry) can develop beard-like hair around the chin -- but it's never been noted in the novels.

As for other elves with facial hair... there's an elf in 3e RAVENLOFT who sports a rather full and extensive beard. But given the changes to the 3e cosmology, we can no longer be certain which world this particular elf came from, if any. He may have been born in the Domains of Dread.

I like to believe there can always be exceptions to the rule :)

But do you think it looks good?

Why can't we keep them hairless in the face? Dwarves have that beard thing down already. Just my two cents though....

I discussed this with Ed hmmm earlier this year I believe and he said yes elves can have facial hair. :)

Edit: It was December 30th of last year actually. :)
The Sage Posted - 04 Oct 2005 : 02:50:06
I've largely interpreted this to be a setting-specific element.

In DRAGONLANCE for example, and according to the novels, Loralon, who lived in Istar and was an advisor to the Kingpriest before being banished back to Silvanost, was so old that he actually had long, wispy white hair on his face. Not a beard per se, but most unusual for an elf, unless they are quite old, as is the case here.

Interesting topic...

Elves do have facial hair, but they age so slowly that facial hair do not appear on them.
Kentinal Posted - 04 Oct 2005 : 02:22:17
Elves generaly do not have hair in certain places, however there have been exceptions with all sub-races.
