Most people choose to be the Universal wizard and not relize their are specialty classes for wizards.

Abjurner
Conjurner
Diviner
Enchanter
Evoker
Illusionist
Necromancer
Transmuter

They all can gain extra spells for their class. The players handbook gives the basic of these classes. So what is your choice of wizards class.

Wouldn't that be an evoker or conjurer then? Abjurers are primarily defensive, after all.



Jander, there's a monk order in the Realms that allows you to take levels as a wizard if the wizard levels aren't more than the monk ones. Or you could take levels as a wizard and then monk . . . .

Your wizard being suitably protected of course, otherwise the Balor (Tanar'ri) is just as likely to turn around and attack the wizard...

hmmm... abjurer i guess... its fun to stand outside someones window, then gate in a balor!!! HAVOC! but it can also be nice when you are in the woods.. trolls and stuff hate fire... BALOR!!!

Personally I would be an enchanter if I was to be something, but I reckon diviner would be one of the most powerful types of specialist wizards. You know, they can see everything before it happens and then prepare for it. Isn't that what power is all about ?

I like enchanter too, evokation is good also but loosing one of conjuration, illusion, transmution, abjuration is not very good. But I would like to play monk/envoker if it is possible

For me, the best wizard was a red wizard enchanter in 2nd ed.
(do they still take 2 school spells/spell level?)
If not a red wizard the best choice would still be an enchanter, because if the opposing schools are chosen necro. and divination, you don't lose much.

Universal wizards choose to study all of the schools so you could see it either way that they are their own type or not.

Universal? They don't pick one of the schools of magic to speacialize in they just do it all. Could that even be considered a specialist?

I think I like the universal wizard the best because I think being able to cast any kind of spell outweighs the advantage of having an extra spell slot. Just MHO...

I guess Ýnvoker is the best choice for me.The simple thought of creating energy out of nowhere thrilles me.With the feat energy substitution now i can do almost anything with the energy now.
think about it now u can throw a lightning bolt to a scene and if it can't be able to take down the target because it is electric-based
you can always change it to one quarter acid,one quarter fire,and one quarter sonic as you please...Yeah i guess that would be fine.
Ý gotto play a high-level invoker in these days...

I think I would prefer playing an Abjurer. Do not ask why.

Beyond that I would probably play a Necromancer or an Illusionist.

All the Specialist classes seems like they would be ideal in certain situations only. But in general I like the idea of an Illusionist for they are the most creative of all wizards. My only problem is (and I have never played an Illusionist for this fact) is how do you get creative with the spells given to you in the PHB? I've read the novels where powerfull Illusions have been casts but still what spell or combination of spells are used to create that illusion. It seems that I would be spending more time preparing for the spells than actually game playing.

I would agree with Dark Lord on this point - Necromancer has always been my traditional favourite...nothing like a legion of uncontrolled undead creatures chasing a party to create good 'teamwork'...

A note if you ever want to time travel.

Mystryl created the time conduit spell to allow travel
through time strictly on her terms. Wizards who sought to
bypass her rules of time travel through new spells ultimately
failed. No matter their methods, they found that Mystryl's
time conduit spell was the only way to time travel.

Mystryl's time-
travel magic is tied to annual cycles; spellcasters and their
companions who traveled back through time always arrive
on the first day of a new year, and the magic recalls them to
their original time at the end of the last day of that year. No
magic within the past or present timeline, not even an-
timagic shells or prismatic spheres, can prevent the recall
of a time-traveler back to his original time. There are a wide
range of side effects to travel by time conduits that were far
more surprising and disturbing to time-travelers. If you do anything that effects the future when you are time traveling. You will either be stranded in that time (since you cant travel forward in time by casting Time Conduit) or recalled to you own time.

Ninth-Level Spell: Time Conduit
(Alteration, Chronomancy)
Range: 30 feet Components: V, S, M
Duration: Special Casting Time: 1 turn

Hah... In that case... how about a chronomancer... he'll just pop back into time to undo all that the other wizards have tried to achieve...

Hmm... don't believe that would work...

My personal favorites would be the conjurer, enchanter and illusionist. As to why? I don't know, I don't have a special preference for arcane spellcasters, just from a role-playing point of view these seem to be the most interesting ones to me.

What kind of question is this? There is simply no answer. You can't say that Invoker is more powerful then Enchanter just because he deals damage, and such. The most powerful should be High Level Necromancer, but that is arguable too. Wizards are 'allpower' characters and there is no measure of their might.

Do you know the Nimbral's wizards?
They specialist Illusionist and can cast spells from all schools. They can also see magic, add bonus spells like priest using Intelligence instead of wisdom (no use in 3rd edition unless you give them twice their normal bonus spells), see invisiblility and infravision up to 120ft
But they suffer major drawbacks: they cannot use weapon, their hitdice is D3, their eyes are their major weakness (-4 against gaseous attacks, ...)

I love them, but it's very hard to play, you have to rely only on your mental abilitues

Universal wizard would probably be the best because they have knowledge of everything. Specialist can just get extra spells in the school that they are proficient but cant use spells from another school.

Necromancers, they cast all sorts of death spells and can resurect as well. The would be good and bad.
