You're right on the mark there. My dreams are always about the Border Kingdoms. Yup!

Oooh! Erlkazar... I like that.
I know you haven't read Master of Chains yet, so I would suggest you do so fairly soon. Since it is the featured setting of the novel, you may find there are parts of Erlkazar that you'll find more interesting due to their exposure in the story.

Posted - 21 Jan 2007 : 00:48:36 I don't think I can consider any city or town in Faerun to be the "coolest".
There are definitely places in the Realms that I like to read about, or perhaps run an adventure in sometime.
I think I'd want one of those out of the place locales in the Realms . . . somewhere that doesn't have a great deal of Realmslore written about it. At one time, I would have said somewhere in the Border Kingdoms. Though Ed Greenwood is keeping most of the Sage's FR dreams come to life for that.

How do supposedly cold-blooded serpent creatures thrive inside a glacier? Hmm, maybe I'll read that bit in Serpent Kingdoms...

Posted - 20 Jan 2007 : 09:33:36 It depends on what you want. I like the Northern cities like Everlund, Silverymoon but also Mirabar & Luskan.
At the moment my number one place is Everlund. On the outside it's a peaceful city but as a DM I made it a place where real evil waits in the shadow. A threat that even the citizens don't espect that exist. It gave my players the feeling of a perfect town where the people lives in harmony but where dark forces are looking to you from the sewers, dark alleys, etc. |

Never heard of it...
Tsk. Tsk. Serpent Kingdoms. (When will someone convince Wizards that indices are necessary in books?!) It's the city in the High Ice which can presumably only be accessed by a portal. The one which leads into the city is not, alas, the one which leads out of the city, so be careful what you step through in wormy old ruins, because a portal in one of them leads to this city inside a glacier -- can't get any cooler than that without Auril's help, I reckon!
Bhaulaea was briefly referenced in Anauroch as well. Though SK expands on those initial details...

Alright, I'll chime in on this one. First would be Neverwinter. I like the idea of the place and the feel of it.
I would agree with you. The computer games aside, I've always placed it at the top of the places I would actually want to live in as far as the Realms go, tied with Highmoon in Deepingdale.
I mean, Waterdeep's big and huge and fancy, but you're considerably more likely to be mugged in the City of Splendors than in the City of Skilled Hands. Throw in favorable weather, (Neverwinter is much more livable in the winter than say, Silverymoon) a civilized-without-being-snotty atmosphere and some really cool artisans making fine clocks, glass, gadgets, books, and other goods. Then you've and the Many-Starred Cloak and a pretty nice ex-adventurer for a mayor, and even Volo was bound to be impressed by the place.
And Highmoon, well, it's always been the Dales town that really seemed Dales-ish to me. A little cool, yet polite, to the overzealous Archenfolk and Sembians, but amiable to more trustworthy folk, you've got a beautiful town with nice people. Not to mention that the Deepingfolk can match any Evermeet or Evereskan elf at archery, and even Evermeet would ask the late Rhauntides for help on historical subjects. Now you've got a small monastery starting up. And Lord Theremin Ulath always struck me as the sort of contented leader with a pleased-half-smirk on his face most of the time. |

Posted - 07 Jan 2007 : 04:14:00 I'm not Wooly, but... Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark and Underdark, mostly. Drow of the Underdark and the Menzoberranzan boxed set also have a little. As does the various "War of the Spider Queen" novels.
There's also a few tidbits in the CotSQ module and its associated web enhancement (mostly to do with Lolth's Silence):- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20020907a

Contrary to popular belief, Menzoberranzan is not all that important a city. It is neither overly large nor particularly noteworthy, as far as drow cities go. |

Posted - 06 Jan 2007 : 21:22:00 Alright, I'll chime in on this one.
First would be Neverwinter. I like the idea of the place and the feel of it.
Second would have to be Gildenglade, though it's specifically my version of it (Elves + Dwarves + Half Elves = pretty damned cool *g*)
As for a nasty place, I'd say Hellgate Keep :) |
Wellin_Adipocere |
Posted - 06 Jan 2007 : 20:02:08 Now everybody knows it's the people that make the city so I would have to say Waterdeep. However, if you are going on the most unique and awe inspiring I have always pictured Ched Nasad as simply breathtaking. A whole city built on a multi-layered spider web!

Posted - 01 Jan 2007 : 03:40:28 My city would be somewhere like Fireshear or Ironmaster. It would be awesome to sail the frozen waters from those docks. I would also like Leuthilspar in Evermeet I'm sure. The architechture would be astounting. |

Posted - 30 Dec 2006 : 17:15:55 Mine would be Westgate or Waterdeep, since we had so many great campaigns there.
I'm remembering the prices for garlic in westgate now. God that was fun. That beatiful look on the players faces when they looked at me an said: WHAT!!! THAT PRICE FOR GARLIC!!!! |
