Worst of all is this remark

"I'd say that Eberron is the Forgotten Realms of this generation!"

The only part of that box set that I get the most use out of is the booklet that has pages and pages of random Waterdeep street scenes. :)

Actually, that was my favorite part of the set.

Still, I'd like to hear what others think.

No worries, Big Al. The Realms will always be the first priority. In fact, I just won eBay auctions for two FR boxed sets I don't have.

Good save!

Oh, but 'tis true! Within the last couple days, I finally won an auction on the Kara-Tur boxed set, which I've been trying to get for a couple years now, and I also managed to get City Systems for a reasonable price.

Whats that on your desk?! An unfinished tome of Realmslore? Mayhaps you had better get back to that instead

Yep, I know. Hence the second part of that statement.

Well, I finally won an auction for a copy of the Eberron sourcebook, and I did it for under $20 (including shipping!), so I get to take a look at this other place. If I like the setting, I *may* try a novel or two...

Exactly, and gracias for saying that.

When Eberron has been around half as long as the Realms then the superlatives can begin.

When it has authors writing novels that end up on the New York times best selling list, then call me.

Until then.....

Well.... they are starting a novel line for Eberron....

I'll stick with my FR novels though.

It's a MMORPG, what were you expecting? Personally I'm glad that it's not using the Realms. Call me cynical but I also wonder whether the project will see the light of days, as has been mentioned, MMORPGs are risky and cost vast amounts of money. Many planned ones have been canned for various reasons, often lack of money. Warhammer Online hit this problem in the last month or two.

Possibly not-a MMORPG requires different things from its setting then the area it is set in can provide(Xen'drik does not lend itself to MMORPGs readily), according to canon.

With Eberron, this could be very different. Players of the PC based game may buy source books and realise they aren't actually getting any more than the on-line game and look elsewhere.

Again, not likely so, considering how much the MMORPG and canon will have to fork.

EDIT: More details have appeared.
kahonen Posted - 09 Aug 2004 : 12:21:04
In fact, thinking about this some more:

At the moment we have a small amount of material from the Realms being used in such things as Baldur's Gate, NWN etc. More often that not, people playing the games who know nothing about actual D&D, are impressed when they see how much more detailed and realistic the source books are. I know an awful lot of players who started this way.

With Eberron, this could be very different. Players of the PC based game may buy source books and realise they aren't actually getting any more than the on-line game and look elsewhere.

Any thoughts on this?

Hm, Eberron as the D&D-Online setting...? Weird decision, it seems they really have high hopes for Eberron. I would have loved to play MMORPG set in the Realms, walk up and down the Sword Coast, travel to Icewind Dale, Cormyr, Calimsham, Sembia or even Kara-Tur or as a Shadow Adept to Shade Enclave or explore the Underdark and play as a drow in Menzoberranzan... damn, endless and tempting possibilities and they don't use the Realms as the setting... . To put it mildly I'm disappointed.

It makes perfect sense to use Eberron. Let's face it, using FR would be a huge undertaking because there is so much canon material which would have to be implemented. Imagine the hassle they would get if the on-line version of Shadowdale didn't have the right number of cottages.

Using Eberron means that the programmers can literally make it up as they go along - material from the on-line world will then appear as canon in the Eberron books.

Hm, Eberron as the D&D-Online setting...? Didn't know about it until now and I'm a bit surprised - a MMORPG is a massive and risky project and I would have it would play in the well-established and well-known Realms instead of a new setting that has yet to gain it's community.

Surely, George, the problem isn't that it stops people buying FR products. It's that it stops Wizards, (or whatever they're called this month), from producing FR products.

It could be argued, I suppose, that the two things are pretty much the same.

Oh, most definitely...

But we should remain vigilant nonetheless. We should take every opportunity to promote the wealth of material that supports such a setting as the Realms... If only to remind those who will now come to believe Eberron is the center of the D&D universe... that the Realms was there, first.

House Sivis will be posting some FAQ's soon at the link above, from Sirius, for Worlds. You will find a few familiar faces putting the Eberron information together.
