Hi
I'm thinking of making Candlekeep the target of a powerful NPC in my campaign. This NPC will somehow try to steal certain books from the inner chamber of Candlekeep and the players must discover and prevent this. But I'm not sure how this NPC should pull it off. Candlekeep has a lot of wards and spells, and I heard it also contains a ghost dragon?? Does anyone have some info on this? I have Volo's Guide to the North, but it doesn't seem to mention this dragon. Some concrete info on the wards would also be great (the place is warded vs. fire and teleports (I think), but is there anything else?).

I am pretty sure there are spiders in Candlekeep because I've heard of cobwebs in books about Candlekeep so there must be spiders. Well, anyway, sorry for the off-topic post. |

And NO, spiders are not insects, the are equals, Lloth's children, you better not kill them, or the Naked Drow below in you Harem will revolt, trust me, you don't want a bunch of pissed off Drow coming after you, ecspecially the females!

I have also heard that no insects or other things of that sort (earwigs, spiders, centepides, etc.) can get into Candlekeep. I don't know if there is a shield around the keep, but once they're in, they're fine, or they can't exist inside Candlekeep at all. If they can't exist in Candlekeep at all, then some druid spells will be rendered ineffective (this was read on the internet, however, so it might not be canon). For "regular" defenses (but who is to say what is regular?) there is guards, walls, and high level mages in Candlekeep, and they could probally read minds using magic, so a Mind Blank spell might be useful. |

Eilistraee is the "Goddess of Song and Beauty", "The Dark Maiden", "Lady of the Dance"
Her portfolio involves: Song, beauty, dance, swordwork, hunting and moonlight.
domains: Chaos, Charm, Drow, Elf, Good, Moon and Portal
Basically she's the goddess of "Good Drow" on the surface world... she's the one that urges her followers to get the drow back to living on the surface world in peace with the surface elves.

For those that haven't read Evermeet:Island of Elves... she's technically Lloth's Daughter (back when Lloth was known as araushnee, Corellon's wife). When Araushnee(Lloth) had plotted a war against the Seldarine (Elven Pantheon) Eilistraee (inadvertantly) was caught in the middle of plot with her brother Vhaeraun (Now god of drow... often thieves and others with agendas on the surface world), who willingly helped Araushnee plot against Corellon and the rest of the pantheon... basically Eilistraee refused her father's pardon for her inadvertant part in the plot... saying she'd keep an eye on Lloth and Vhaeraun in Faerun... the three deities were banished from the elven pantheon and are in a sense mainly for Faerun. |

Thanks for all the great answers. Using a book to get someone inside looks like one of the most promising plans. I like logic in my games, so I'm always trying to find realistic reasons why things happen (and in this case, how the NPC managed to steal the stuff). Actually, a complex plan like the one in the movie "Ocean's Eleven" is what I'm looking for. On one side, this will really "wow" the players once they find out, and on the other side, the need for such a crazy plan would explain why no one tried (or succeeded) in the past. It gives the whole thing a very big "oh my god, he did it"-factor. :)
I have quite some time to think this up (the group's just started, so it will take some months or even years when we get to the Candlekeep part), but I'll probably drop in some related early adventure hooks to make everything fall into place in the end (don't you just love it when the pieces of your campaign in the end all fall into place?). |

Ahem, ill have you know that I run a very respectable library here ArionElenim!  Theres certainly no "sneaking" in of "controversial tomes", our scribes are never "duped" and we definately dont employ "lowly janitors"!!

In cases such as the ones you speak of, Necro (DMing a way into an impenetrable fortress), I like to rely on good-old-fashioned greed to get us in.
In other words, I could see this NPC walking into Candlekeep with a huge, rare and highly expensive tome to donate. This will allow him entrance. After that, perhaps he (or she, let's not be sexist ) is able to dupe one of the moderate-level scribes or even a lowly janitor or something into betraying Candlekeep to him...an item that will allow him to bypass the security wards, a secret underground tunnel that one of the scribes used to use to sneak controversial tomes in through, etc....
Yup, nothing breaks down the mighty walls of a fortress like a backstabbing peon I always say! |

That is quite a cool idea.
I can confirm no more that what Alaundo has already said but my simple solution is: Just make it up!!!!
As long as it's realistic an believable to stop you inventing wards and defences.

In addition to the sources mentioned by Alaundo, Candlekeep also features in one of the Godswar novels. IIRC, it is in Crucible or in the Trial of Cyric. |

Candlekeep has magic in place to prevent any form of flame within its walls. Very powerful wards are in place to prevent any damage (malicious or accidental) to the many thousands of scrolls and tomes kept within. The actual substance of books and cloth is protected, IIRC, only candles themselves are permitted to burn. i.e. placing a candle flame on the edge of a scroll or tapestry will NOT burn the item!
Very little information has been documented officially for Candlekeep. The only details of which im aware (much of it is repeated) exists in:

By the way, would Candlekeep hold anything else besides books and scrolls (like wands, artifacts, ...)? |
