I am attempting to find if the late King Azoun IV has an official entry given for 3rd edition. If not does anyone know in which product his latest details were given?
I have the following entries for him in my own library,
Original Gray Box DMs Sourcebook (1987) - listing him as a lvl 20 Cavalier (pg. 18)
FRC2 Curse of the Azure Bonds (1989) - listing him as a lvl 20 Cavalier (pg. 83)
Forgotten Realms Adventures (Hardcover 1990) – listing him as a lvl 20 Fighter (pg. 108)
I don’t have the product Into the Dragon’s Lair so I am unclear if he has any stats listed in that module (although it is after his death apparently).
If no such entry exists then based on previous entries what 3E class should he have? And should he have a PrC of Purple Dragon Knight and/or any other PrC?

Assuming that he actually used to fight on horseback (I have not read the Cormyr novels, so it may be that he was given Cavalier levels in 1E just to say "he's a chivalrous fighter"), I think it's a good idea to give him levels in the Cavalier prestige class. Since PDK has only 5 level, that would turn out perfect: Fighter 5 / Purple Dragon Knight 5 / Cavalier 10.
Also, the wonderful Green Giant wrote 3E stats for Azoun Obarskyr (as well as for a TON of other Realms characters) in the following thread: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=142994&perpage=50&pagenumber=6. He used an obscure, although appropriate, PrC (Noble Adventurer of Cormyr from the Dragon magazine), though, which may prevent some DMs (including me) from being able to actually use that writeup. |

Yes, I do realize his stats are from 2E, but of course not everyone plays 3E rules in accordance with the current 3E FR timeline. My campaign is only up to 1369 so the monarch is still very much alive (for 2 years at least  ).
Interesting to note his drop in strength over the years (age?) as he was listed in FRC2 with STR 18/00.
I was not too concerned with his stats however, as Sarta points out conversion of that is easy enough, mostly I was concerned with how his class should be portrayed with 3E rules. There are so many FR PrCs now it is sometimes hard to know where to begin.
Most NPCs remain consistent but there is a big differentiation with a few NPCs over the years (consider his daughter Alusair who was originally a 6th lvl Thief in FRC2)
If I could have my wish for any book to be developed what I am really longing for from WOTC is an Encyclopedia of the FR. Sort of like the old FR Atlas, but it would just list entries of Events, Locations, Items and Characters. However, instead of giving any real info about them it would instead reference (by order of print) each games accessory that particular subject has been printed in. It could optionally include Novels, but I would think with the vast number of old game materials that have been printed it would already be a Herculean task to put together. ….Well one can dream

Probably a direct result of his having died during 2nd edition.
However, as Bakra pointed out, it would be fairly easy to reconstruct what his stats would be given 3edition. I'd assume a mix of fighter and purple knight.

May the Gaming Gods forgive me, his following stats for 3e are:
Str:0
Dex:0
Int:0
Wis:0
Con: Definitely 0
Chr: -10
*starts to dodge dice*
On a serious note, he would be fighter level 10 and Purple Dragon Knight 10. The main adjustment would be to his strength...in 2e it was 18/76...in the new system it might be 19 unless you use old age rules, then it would be less than that but chances are it is a 19 for str.

I have that product and Azoun is not detailed within the item. To my knowledge there have been no official 3e stats published for the character. |
