Posted - 22 Apr 2004 : 13:14:55 I have a number of friends birthdays coming up on my social calendar next month (five in fact), not to mention the Sage's which is in a few days. The majority of these friends are role-players, three of which regularly participate in the Sage's Realms campaign.
Four of these five only have a few gaming accessories between them, since they don't have a lot of money to buy every accessory they might like. What I'm looking for are some suggestions on possible general d20 gaming accessories that you might think would make, either interesting or useful presents. I would like to keep this as a surprise, which means that I really can't go out and ask them what they want.
So, let's try it this way. If someone was buying a game accessory for you as a present, what d20 product would you like to receive as a gift?. Any suggestion will do, and, I appreciate the assistance .

I look forward to that. Just give me some time to familiarise myself with these Chaulssin details you've directed me to. [/quote] Indeed, Lady Kazandra, I hope you enjoy the City of Wyrmshadows, for 'twas once my home, err, Shadowlord's home. |

I will Shadowlord, thank you. I have a particular interest in drow history, although it's not my mine focus of the Realms.
Indeed? Then you may be fascinated with some of the interesting facts about drow I've unearthed. We shall have to discuss this further. I must say, your knowledge of Realmslore thus far impresses me.

I'll try and make the ethereal mail version of this adventure available to you both as well, Bookwyrm and Wooly. For everyone else who is interested, the edited version will be posted in the Adventuring section shortly.

My, my, am I that predictable, Lady Kazandra? Honestly, for a 3,000 year old drow/shade, I didn't think I was doing too bad...
3,000 years you say. Well, that's a story I'd like to hear about sometime .

At the moment, the only game I play with minis is BattleTech. I've no interest in Warhammer, though I do want to play 40k. I've already got an insane amount of Space Wolf figs, it's just that I've no desire to actually assemble and paint them -- I want to play the game; that other stuff is not for me.
Like the Sage, another BattleTech player . . . what is it with males and BattleTech . Do you bother with the Dark Age setting, or do you just stick to CBT?.
And you have Space Wolves, I like to see the battle between them and the Sage's 'Thousand Sons' companies - wholesome fun for all . . .
So, do you use any of your non-D&D minis in your D&D games Wooly?.

Is it really possible for a Warhammer player to have enough minis?
I take it then, that you play Warhammer . . . ?
Besides, it's not only Warhammer minis, it's the WH40K and Mordheim miniatures as well, not to mention a number of GW LotR miniature lines . . .

*bows deeply* My pleasure
I love art myself thought about going into computer graphics since my talents there are somewhat better than with pencil or paint. Still I love art and thats the kind of present I've done a few times for friends
Now how about my other idea about you DMing a "birthday adventure" game for all of them? Go back to page one to read it I think its a good idea too |

Posted - 25 Apr 2004 : 16:09:16 That's what I thought. The reclassification of the human ethnicities in PGtF was done rather well I thought. It's a much better system than the way the diverse humans races were portrayed in RoF.
|
Dargoth |
Posted - 25 Apr 2004 : 15:52:37 ROF and PGTF complement each other fairly well the two books represent the "FR Must haves" for players" the only thing thats some what Redundant in the ROF is the setion on the human races which to an extent have been replaced by the new regionalisation system in PGTF. |
Lady Kazandra |
Posted - 25 Apr 2004 : 15:45:19 The Sage already has Complete Divine, the Expanded Psionics Handbook, and Serpent Kingdoms on pre-order at a considerable discount, so those options are out .
Your suggestion of Races of Faerun is a great idea though. Since they all play in the Realms, this book could be of great benefit to at least one of them. Is the material inside though, considered up-to-date?. Has it been made redundant be any other FR release?. I still haven't finished PGtF yet, so I'm not sure whether this tome updates the material in Races of Faerun in any way.
Your gift certificate idea is also good. Since there's not really alot of WotC material being released in May, the vouchers will allow them to purchase something else they might like once it's released. I know one of them is eagerly anticipating the Eberron release, so that's another gift covered.
Just two more, and the Sage to go . . .
|
Dargoth |
Posted - 25 Apr 2004 : 15:28:54 You could always get Sage, Complete divine or the Expanded Psionic handbook if hes not interested in either of those you could always get him a gift certificate for Serpent Kingdoms or Annihlation (the next WOSQ novel)
As for the players youve got to buy gifts for, what characters are they playing? What class and Race?
If there playing an FR campaign you cant go wrong with Races of Faerun its fiarly broad and its fairly safe material wise (theres not much material in it that you need to keep away from players.
If there playing a Fighter then get them Complete Warrior if there playing a Cleric get them Complete divine if there playing a wizard or a Sorceror get them a Gift Certificate for complete Arcane when it comes out later this year.
Another option is Players guide to Faerun (again assuming there playing in an FR campaign) the PGTF makes a nice useful book for most players. |

I had another idea (if you didn't see my first one Lady Kazandra please go back to the first page of this scroll ) If you are even somewhat artistic or just like to draw/paint you could make a character portrait for each of their favorite characters? I think that would be such a cool present
I do have some artistic ability. If I hadn't started studying Biotechnology, I think I would have liked to become an artist . . . although the fact that standard artists here in Australia get even less recognition than most artists do overseas kind of puts one's ambitions into focus . . . .
Anyway, I did most of the artwork for the Sage's first homebrew world: Legends of Amasaria. Of course, I would have liked to work on his Gateway setting, but some of the elements of this long running campaign world are just simply too bizarre. If you've ever been to the Church of Zeroes website, you'll know what I'm talking about . . .
Again your idea has potential though. A number of my friends have their favorite PCs that they like to play from time to time. Some don't even have a character portrait, just a few lines that describes the PC's appearance. I might try it for one of them, but I think I'll leave it for the last birthday in May since it gives me enough time to work on it.
Thanks for the suggestion Wood Elf, you're quite a remarkable ranger .

Posted - 25 Apr 2004 : 06:29:27 From what I understand, the customization of miniatures in Warhammer (speaking as someone who knows even less now than you did then) is like the roleplaying in D&D. If you don't do it, you're automatically a pariah among the "real" players.
Of course, that trivializes it, doesn't it? Oh, not the hunks of plastic -- the idea of good roleplaying being "Oh, cool miniature . . . ." |

No kidding.
I found out the hard way how to piss off some harcore Warhammer players. I jumped into a pick up game at Dundracon here in California. Now, I don't play it at all and have never considered miniatures all that important -- give me another game supplement any day over a painted hunk of plastic, lead, or pewter. Needless to say, when I tried to have them designate the 20 or so D6's I had placed on the table as my troops there was a very uncomfortable silence. You would have thought they were rat droppings the way they reacted.

Posted - 25 Apr 2004 : 05:38:54 Hmm how about taking a turn as the DM and setting up some sort of "Birthday mini adventure" for all of them together? It would only cost you time if your short on money and it would be something thats a lot of fun for everyone and of course provide cake and milk while you play |
