Do they exist in Faerun? If so are there any communities? Where would they be found?

There was one in the Rogue Dragon books, but I'm not recalling one in the Cormyr books. There was another in Elminster's Daughter, as I recall.

Aye. Can't recall there being a song dragon in any of the "Cormyr" books.

One of the heroes in Richard Lee Byers's Rogue Dragons trilogy is a song dragon.

Wooly is 100% right - I was thinking of Elminster's Daughter, my thoughts went to the fact that it's set in Cormyr, and I wrote Cormyr. My mistake!

Ed created them, so of course they appear in the Realms. They date back to a long-ago issue of Dragon (134) that I believe predated the OGB.

They were renamed, I believe, to avoid confusion with true lycanthropes -- despite the original name, song dragons have nothing in common with lycanthropes, other than changing into something non-human.

I think Weredragon sounds WAY cooler than Song Dragon.

They were Were-dragons in 1st and 2nd edition and Song in 3rd. Not sure what happened to them after that.

They're most common in the Moonshaes, but present all over. What period are you talking about?

Was thinking about current period of the realms.

I like the term "song dragon," but mostly because I've tended to make them even more aurally-inspired in my Realms. So the name fits perfectly. They are literally embodiments of songs at play in ancient draconic languages.

Well, that sounds nice. You got me there! :)

Dragon 134:

quote:
Weredragons are exceedingly rare creatures. They are the source of many folk tales concerning beautiful women transformed into dragons; this is due the weredragon #146;s ability to assume the form of a comely human female whenever desired.
The name #147;weredragon#148; is not entirely accurate, as this creature does not seem to have lycanthropy in the same way other werecreatures do. Weredragons cannot be #147;cured#148; of their abilities, nor are they able to transmit them to other creatures by biting or any other means. Furthermore, the phases of the moon have no effect on the ability of weredragons to change form.

In dragon form, weredragons are slim and splendid, usually an iridescent blue and silver in color, and most closely resemble wingless copper dragons in physical shape and size (a magical organ in their brains allows flight).

Monsters of Faerun:

quote:
Song dragons are a rare and mysterious race of dragons that prefer life among humanity to the company of other dragons. They can freely take on the form of a human woman, and in this guise they live among humankind, revealing their true nature only in times of personal peril or great crisis.
In their natural form, song dragons are slim and splendid dragons with iridescent silver-blue scales and the general shape of a copper dragon

It does appear that they got wings in 3ed and lost their magical flight organ...

Where they are:

1st ed:

quote:
Weredragons do not consort with others of their own kind (whom they can recognize on sight in either form, just as they can recognize any polymorphed or shape changed dragon in any form). They prefer dwelling in cities or courts to wilderness solitude. These creatures are not as vain as other dragons and cannot be subdued as a dragon can, although they often submit to capture or temporary sominance if they deem it wisest. In human form, weredragons often amass great treasure by beguiling rich suitors; later, these suitors are slain by the weredragon, which has returned to its dragon form. Weredragons are usually the equal of any sage when dealing with the history of the lands they have inhabited. Much of the history and aims of these creatures, however, remains a mystery. They are known from legend in the FORGOTTEN REALMS#153; fantasy setting, and one is said to have lived in the great city of Waterdeep as recently as 20 years past, having lived for years as the consort of a military officer.

3rd ed:
quote:
Found throughout the Realms, song dragons often serve or cooperate with good mages, Harpers, and groups and individuals with similar aims or opportunities to preserve, renew, and protect the land. They are quite common in the Moonshae Isles, a fact that leads sages to speculate that they originated in that land. They remain shrouded in mystery, however—so much that two accidental sightings of song dragons assuming their natural form once started a panicked rumor that evil wizards were transforming their foes into dragons.

Hmmm. They're the same beast, Wooly? I'll look into my Dragons when I get home. I was under the impression that Ed devised them about the same time he wrote Elminster's Daughter.

Were/song dragons were first published in DRAGON #134 -- in a 1e article. They were renamed song dragons in 3e to help clear up the point of confusion that many had regarding the 1e/2e were-dragon. 'Twas thought to be a lycanthrope, when it actually wasn't. They were simply renamed song dragons; both names are used in Faerūn ['were-dragon' not just by the ignorant].

The dragon referred to as a were-dragon in the Forgotten Realms is also known as the Song Dragon.
The Arcanamach Posted - 26 Aug 2013 : 21:45:05
I think there were some in Waterdeep but I may be confusing them with shapechanged dragons. I think weredragons were just one of those creatures that fell through the cracks during edition changes. Sylune was a type of weredragon though (a gift from Savras).
