I mean there are some pretty good ones already and some that flirt as is. But who do you all see as a long lasting couple, one that would be in the right term, or at least close to it, the "perfect" couple in D&D? |

Cult_Leader, I may be your "pet" but if you think hard about it I'm the master and your the slave here, as many others are slaves onto their pets. The only reason Drizzts has it easy when it comes to women is because he's famous. Name anyone famous that women don't fall over themselves for. |

Posted - 04 Mar 2004 : 13:46:22 Well anyway , Lina is still my pet by contract hehe. Ok cool Drow doing other members of their family. Yes thats actually a slightly common thing, Its happens. You might think that if Dri had gone along with the rest of the drow stock that he might have done his sister, the one born from the same father. If I remember correctly, ick it was when he was like a baby his mother told her not to. Anyway, Actually .... Dr had it really easy when it comes to ladies. That lucky bastard.... I mean come on, human ladies like him, some eleven ones seem to after they know him, and .... well.... Most Drow Females want to make him his. So all i need to do is find that class that some low life made for his char, called the pimp, capture D, and woot, I will make a lot of gold. |

Posted - 28 Feb 2004 : 02:44:49 Yeah, I would probably have to go with CD on this - why would a little incest be repugnant to the drow? Given that they do not have a classic western family structure with marriage and such it does not seem far fetched. Indeed, as many if not most children of a priestess or matron are probably only half-siblings (given the consort/patron system that stands in place of marriage) I think incest, at least laterally, would be relatively common. |

Posted - 28 Feb 2004 : 02:02:07 We hate to be the ones to break it to you Shadowlord, But we have heard of hints of such 'relationships' among the drow. Albeit briefly and perhaps at times as only mere rumors, even the mere mention of such things mean that they are not as uncommon as one would like among the Drow. |

Posted - 27 Feb 2004 : 21:14:48 Previously Roewyn said: However Loviatar and Ilmater make a great couple. One loves to hurt other to suffer, they can make eachother very happy.
Hmm...prolly not I think. People who like to suffer do not make good play-pals for those who like to inflict real suffering - after all if you like to 'suffer' you are not really suffering when you are...suffering. Clear as mud huh? In otherwords, Loviatar would not get much pleasure from whipping Ilmater because that what Ilmater likes. The worst thing Loviatar could do to Ilmater is ignore him, and that I think, would simply not be very gratifying to her.
Now..on to what this post is really about - Lolth. Lolth and Cyric, Lolth and Selevetarm...the key componenet here is Lolth (well, it is because I my Cyric knowledge is rather limited while my Lolth knowledge is...not).
The title of this thread is "Love" but we have to take that out of the equation where Lolth is involved from the start. Not that she will never love (no one is beyond redemption until they're finally dead) but at the moment, she is not capable of it.
Lolth is all about hate - and not just hate for elves or the seldarine but hate for herself and everything made in her image as well. I shall explain...
Back in the day, when Lolth was a cute elf-girl running around Arvandor named Araushnee she had this boy friend named Corellon. Corellon was the big man on campus and very popular among the elf set. Fine. Problem was that Araushnee wanted to be the leader and not by Corellon's side.
Well...she had a couple of choices as those in such situations do..she could compete with Corellon and earn the leadership (or not) or she could betray him and remove him. She chose the latter course. Why? Because she obviously felt the first option was not viable - here we see the first sign of her self-esteem problem (which probably originated because she was 'different' from the other elves with her dark skin and light hair and got teased in elf-goddess-daycare).
So, Araushnee betrays Corellon ... but fails. He transforms her into a drider looking thing and casts her into the Abyss.
Now, as we all know, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Nevermind she brought it on herself - thats male logic attempting to impose itself on female emotions and it will not work. Araushnee, now Lolth, has MUCH more to hate - she hates Corellon for defeating her, she hates her state in life, she hates herself for failing and she basically just hates everything. I mean, wouldn't you? From the manicured forests of Arvandor to the depths of the Abyss? Talk about a drop in propery values.
Anyway, so, Lolth goes about influencing the Ilythiir who anniliate the moon-elves of the Myritar (sp?). Corellon is mad and curses the Ilythiir making them the drow we know and love today. Lolth has her own followers, now in her own image. Does she love them?
No! Of course not silly - she hates them - she hates herself so why would she love something so akin to herself.
How do we know Lolth hates herself? Look at the society she set up. She makes the males second class citizens in her revenge on Corellon but she reserves her special torments for those most like herself - the priestesses - the ones of her followers most like herself.
What creature is more tormented in Faerun that the priestesses of Lolth? They have to serve a goddess that plays with them; they rear children that they will have to kill, or watch die in some Lolthian test or...for those children that actually live...the priestesses have to watch their back because someday its guaranteed that the child will try and kill its mother. In the meantime the priestess must constantly seek the favor of Lolth and compete with all her peers to do so AND virtually every sentient being on the face of Toril...or under it...would prefer to see the priestess dead including most other priestesses!
Now, I know, you are thinking, 'but the males, the slaves, they have it worse.' Not so.
The slaves actions and lives are ruled over by slavemasters, presumably other lesser race creatures or drow soldiers and such. Big deal. Those slavemasters are nothing in comparison to what drow males have to watch out for - drow females! The priestesses who watch over the males are, as mentioned, capricious, fickle, evil, conniving and sadistic. Its in their job description.
But who stands above the priestesses? Lolth.
So, who would you rather answer to for your life? A slavemaster? A psychotic priestess? Or a virtually insane Goddess that hates everything?
And what happens to these priestesses? Say one serves Lolth faithfully and successfully all her life. What then is her reward? Well, for Matron Ghenni'tiroth Tlabbar her fate was to be abandoned by Lolth at a critical moment and end up with her heart cutout and laying on her own sacrificial platter.
Surely there is a reward in the afterlife that makes it all worthwhile right? Well....if a priestess is really faithful and competent and such mayhaps Lolth will make her a Yochlol, a handmaiden of Lolth.
Ever seen one? UGLY. They look like a person turned inside out with one big dinner-plate sized blood shot eye.
Ironic isn't it? In life, Lolth likes her priestesses beautiful in appearance but ugly in soul (see the part where they are all lying, conniving, petty, deceitful, murderous etc.). However, once dead, Lolth makes them as ugly on the outside as they were on the inside - sort of like what Corellon did to HER when he transformed her into a drider shaped thing. Granted, she can take a drow form and so can the Yochlols but sheesh, who would EVER want to be a 6' tall reeking lump of tentacled flesh? They should be called "Yuck-ols."
Point is Lolth really focuses her attention and torments most like herself thus showing how much she hates herself.
NOW...to get us back on track. What does this have to do with Cyric and Selevetarm?
Well, that Lolth has this dominant/subordinate relationship with Selevetarm is not hard to figure out - he is a male of lesser stature and really beneath her hate but he is useful so ... she uses him.
As for Cyric..well..he would not be so easily used. A relatonship with him would be ... whats the buzzword? Toxic. (I feel so 'Dr. Phil' now). Toxic and outright dangerous - it can only really end one way - Cyric would try to kill her. Lolth I think, even in her self hatred, will skip this. She is self-hating but she is sophisticated. True, LOTS of women get involved with men they shouldn't and carry on in toxic, dangerous relationships (trust me on this one - I think back about some of the guys I dated during a certain period of my life and, well, for the love of Lolth what was I thinking?).
Lolth is just too sophisticated. She is self-hating and somewhat self-destructive..but simply too smart, conniving, and, at a surface level, too confident to do something that base.
So, that was my long way of saying I don't think Lolth and Cyric would hook up - at least not for anything but a one-night stand.
Ciao!

Yes, but there's a clear pecking order in the Lolth and Selvetarm relationship. She is in charge. Do you see Cyric agreeing to such a role in a relationship? |
