Hi! I'm playing an Oghma priest in a new campaign we started this week. I have in mind something like a medieval scientist. Often involving himself with the study of celestial objects or natural phenomenons. My adventuring reason is to find some scrolls and books to add to my hometown's oghma church/library's archive colletion. Anyone else ever played an Oghma priest? Any tips and ideas?

From the "Old Grey Box":

quote:

OGHMA (OGG-mah)
The Binder
God of Knowledge, Invention, Patron of Bards N
Greater Power Concordant Opposition
Symbol: A partially unrolled scroll

NOTES: Oghma of the Forgotten Realms is the same being as the Oghma of the Celtic mythos in L&L, save for the lack in the Forgotten Realms of true names other than those provided for in the spell of the same name. Oghma appears in the realms as an old burly man with a black beard streaked with white, and carries a yarting of white snowwood on a thong across his back.

So he is not only identical...he IS Oghma of Celtic Lore.

Haha. Nah, but I did vaguely remember reading these things in "TCQ" years ago. I took notes on Cadderly and his associates, since they were the real stars of that series, but not the Oghmans, so I had to go back and double-check a few passages.

Also, since Oghma is god of knowledge, while Deneir is god of art, there seems to have been a little bit of (mostly good-natured) ribbing between the two gods' adherents in "TCQ". Oghmans seem to be a little haughtier, since they focus on what has actually been demonstrated and proven (what is known); meanwhile, Deneirans come across as more open-minded and relativistic, since they pursue the arts (what is felt). Think Spock vs. Bones, or Sheldon vs. Penny.

One of those strange things, this is the right God and yet the wrong God. In the Realms I don't think he is known for binding fiends. And yet I love this idea.

Two role-playing tips for you. One have your character always carrying a book around.
Two go to the local book store and buy a writing journal. Anytime your character casts a spell hold the book up in the air. Anytime someone has a good idea write the idea down and say ,”For Oghma!” or something along those lines.

Jeez BEAST, did you memorize every realms book? I spent my time memorizing the Hobbit, so i can complain about it in the theater next month!

In "The Cleric Quintet", Oghman priests were described as wearing white tunics and trousers, with black and gold vests, brown cloaks, and silver scroll necklace ornaments.

Oghma is Celtic originally...and so he would also be of that origin in the Forgotten Realms. Just as Tyr was an "invader god"...Oghma the Binder is most likely an interloper deity.

Hmm, does that mean he sends them to the special Hell?

Likewise, me neither.

He's actually based off the Finnish god who goes by the same name. (or was he Celtic? Can't remember)

Search appears to indicate more likely Celtic, though not the same deity.

It's a magic cape, of course it will have tassels.

Cape with tassles, or no cape with tassles?

Also, IIRC, Oghma is "The Binder" not because he binds books but because he binds demons. I thought that there were always strong connections between this and his followers proclivity for wrestling. Throw a Balor in a metaphysical Hammerlock as it were.

Yes, WalkerNinja is right. In 2e Faiths & Avatars it is said that there are basically two kinds of Oghma priests, cloystered and adventurers. They make some money working as scribes (but then, in 2e not everyone knows to read and write). In the description of the Lorekeeper specialty priests, it is said that although they can use weapons, they are specialized in wrestling combat. Maybe they practice like shaolin monks, to defend themselves when they are in pilgrimage, and to keep healthy in spite of spending a lot of time in front of tomes.

Edit: Check the entry http://nj-pbem.com/data/Gods/humangods/Oghma.htm, it brings the information of Faiths & Avatars about Oghma.

Oghma priests are great wrestlers. Or as they say where I'm from, "rasslers"
