"perhaps it is because I found great pleasure in casting a memory charm upon him" lee quickly addresses to The Shadowlord in the silent drow hand language...
I think it is very clever of Wizards to link the two games together in this abnormally subtle way....

Thats strange, I can clearly remember the reference. As said by the guy in the chair.

ah, i remember the room with the pillows, just not the reference 2 black lotus
Shadowlord Posted - 19 Jan 2004 : 19:46:49
And yes, it is the room with pillows on the floor in BG 2.

They r 2 separate things though, both by the same company, but supposed 2 be completely separate, not intersecting at all

Yup, it surely is that card... Baldur's Gate is Wizards of the Coast, right? And Magic the Gathering is too, so it looks like Wizards is doing a bit of advertising for themselves.... Funny that BG's never mentioned in Magic though.

the 1 with all the pillows on the floor?

when you are going to where they house the gladiators, there are two hidden rooms. One leads to a sewer, and another has a small room where they talk about black lotus.

ok i remember the merchant at the city gates now that u mention it. but i dont remember the guy in the Copper Coronet...where is this 'hidden room'?

Possibly, or maybe evil of some sort......

I think the Black Lotus is an inversion of the typical Lotus Flower that was sacred to the ancient Egyptians. The Lotus that was revered by the people of this time was a bright white water plant or water lilly which bloomed at dusk. The Egyptians used the Lotus to symbolize the sun and possibly birth...therefore, a Black Lotus would symbolize...death?

perhaps it does have to do with that card...
hmmmmmmmmm

Well, it might be a reference to this.(Warning: That link may resize your browser window.)

References to 'Black Lotus' abound in the Baldur's Gate games, both I and II. It can obviously be gathered that 'Black Lotus' is a narcotic, but as to whether or not any canon Forgotten Realms sources regarding said narcotic exist...I'll get back to you. As for the nature of 'Black Lotus', the concept of it being similar to cannabis makes sense, particularly for the time period the Realms generally corolate to (If I remember correctly cocaine and heroin, as well as most other drugs, did not exist as we know them today. Most opiates and cocaine did not become big until some what later in history, as both heroin and cocaine require a certain level of processessing to produce, where as cannabiss does not.), though I get the distinct impression the various references to said drug were something of a joke on the part of the game designers.

Well there's a Black Lotus toxin in the RL setting...which is the only one I can remember at the moment, although I doubt it is the one you are talking about...

I'll check my books.
