Ok, an interesting dilemma arose in tonights session...

We ended up wondering and arguing over whether or not through use of the Deflect Arrows or Snatch Arrows feats, could one catch a caber or a flying dwarf?

Thanks in advance

Well I suppose you could make a feat that both of you could take to make dwarf throwing more effective. Something that you have to both take so you could get bonuses. There is a feat in Sword and Fist and I think its in Complete Warrior too called Throw Anything. You can basiclly at a 10 foot range throw anything even it isnt meant to be a weapon, such as a...oh I don't know...dwarf?

I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting a serious answer from you (so many answers ... so little time).

If, however, you want a serious answer from me, I would suggest that as a dwarf tends to be approx 4 feet in circumference then if he is only being thrown for 10 feet the object at twhich the dwarf is being thrown will almost certainly not have time to react to either catch him, dodge him or do anything else you can imagine doing to a flying dwarf.

Perhaps what you need is to introduce some new feats to go with the new rules. How about:

1. Dodge thrown Dwarf
2. Catch thrown Dwarf
3. Ignore obvious wind up

I'm sure the other people posting to the thread can come up with some other examples.

This unorthodox dwarf is more than welcoming when asked (if asked, which hasn't happened yet) to be thrown at the enemy, as he sees it as more chance to do damage, not thinking of the possible negative results of such an action.
Also, this course of action has led to many defeatings of our opponents, it was the second to last blow on a fecal golem (which i ended up diving through with a punch), and it also destroyed a chain golem, by allowing the dwarf to thrash as 1d4 damage...he did this because the chain golem wrapped it's chains around his weapons.

1. Myself and the dwarf, as he has a cursed "dwarven thrower" hammer
2. 14
3. 10 feet or so, similar to a dart/shuriken
4. Not as of yet
5. His last throw was naked, but normally fully equipped in full plate
6. By beard, horns on helm, or by weapon
7. Doubtful
8. Dwarves are currently the only thrown race we have developed statistics for, so for the moment, I would say yes, but at a penalty to hit
9. None of the rules our dm comes up with are really thought out: No multi PrC, and can only use races from the PHB are ones that come to mind. In regards to the dwarf, he can only be thrown if willing

That however still doesn't answer the caber!

Yes, but if our DM allows tossing dwarves as a throwing weapon not unlike a grenade (his words, not mine), then shouldn't we be able to deflect that?

I'd like to see a little more information on this:

1. Who is allowed to throw the dwarf?
2. What is their Strength?
3. How far is the dwarf expected to be thrown?
4. Does the Dwarf explode ("not unlike a grenade") when he/she lands?
5. Are we considering a naked dwarf or one that is fully equipped?
6. How is the dwarf gripped before being thrown (ie does your campaign include a subrace of dwarves with handles)?
7. Can the dwarf being thrown be replaced with a lighter, perhaps easier to grip, human?
8. Can an ambidextrous player throw two halflings?
9. Can you please describe some of the other carefully thought out "house rules" your DM has introduced? It's lunch time, I'm at work, I'm having a bad day and need another try at choking on my sandwich.

I have to agree with Belfar, even if I don`t play 3rd i still think Belfars argument are logical

but that`s just an 2nd ed player opinion
Belfar Posted - 16 Jan 2004 : 01:37:53
Well I think it refers to smaller thrown weapons. I mean if a giant throws a boulder how are you gonna deflect that? Well whatever your DM decides. Also a dwarf weighs 180+ lbs. I mean come on people be logical.
Tsynn the Sanguine Posted - 16 Jan 2004 : 01:35:22
Deflect Arrow: You can deflect incomming arrows, as well as crossbow bolts, spears and other shot or thrown weapons

our DM insists that thrown or shot weapons are sling bullets, shuriken and that such, but the caber and the dwarf (sometimes) are thrown weapons.
Belfar Posted - 16 Jan 2004 : 00:20:14
I would doubt it. An arrow shaft and a dwarf have extremely differing diameters. But maybe thats just me.
