And Sage, I think I've already mentioned the Nietzschean philosophical element in Shadowbane, but if I haven't . . . there's a Nietzchean philosophical element in Shadowbane.

I can see a potential future where Kalen will undoubtedly be forced to consider the exact moral width of that line as his definition continues to shift.
And I particularly like the philosophically "gray" element he's taken. Now we're getting into explorations of Schopenhauer and Heidegger territory -- which makes me a very happy Sage!

and whatif shadowbane's sword is not the only sword that HElm placed his essence into??
lots of speculation one can do before the third comes out.....
on that speculation note, wonder hwhat would happen if all the blades came into one place... would such an event restore everwatchfull, the bastard sword of HElm.....

I blame Erik, for having such likable characters.

That's always the more difficult side of the alignment-coin to properly define.
His definition of good shifts as time passes, from a very black-and-white vigilante sort of perspective (good and evil exist and are clearly defined) to one that is more gray (actions are good or evil, people aren't inherently good or evil). He believes (at least at this point) that the ends justify the means, though there are certain lines he's hesitant to cross. Also, he's constantly walking a very fine line.
Not to give spoilers, but Kalen originally comes from a thief/cutthroat sort of background, and I think in his early career he would view what he did as a youth as definitely EVIL. As time passes, however, his perspective on his own background changes.
His evolving morality is one of the main themes of the series. You'll see the shift from Downshadow to Shadowbane, and it should come across very clearly in the third of the series, Eye of Justice (working title).
