Posted - 06 Apr 2010 : 03:22:06 I haven't been here in sometime, but it feels like neither has the awesome cartographer of the Realms, MarkusTay, either. Has something happened to him? I haven't seen a map update or new map in a long period of time. There were some maps I'd like to request. |

In fact, it may have been that very map that made me start a new world map, because I had to up the resolution in order to get in all the tiny details - it isn't easy reconciling the original (non-FR) Bloodstone maps with the later versions of Vassa and Damara.
Anyhow, I opened up PS once since I've been back to check something, but haven't done any new mapping yet - I have to see where I was at with everything (its been awhile).
The idea was to create a PDF of FR with layers, so DMs could print what they wanted (and alleviate me the need to create those naked maps separately). Maybe I'll do one of just The North (for now) to see how that works out.
>gets folding chair from the back room<
I'll be happy to wait. I'm always happy to see my favorite cartographers' works.

Something this awesome is worth waiting for, from either of you.
A Markustay/HandsomeRob team up would be some pretty insane, yet splendidly perfected, Toril maps. |

Layered PDFs would be awesome indeed!
Lord Karsus would be most pleased; these maps are invaluable for preparing the lands of Faerun for his eminent dominion... :p
Speaking of which, the great Karsus requests that Sir Markustay draw a current map of the Dire Woods and Karse so that his minions may retrieve his physical remains... |

WOW... I have to say, if the cartography for the original 4E Faerun map had been like this, I would have been much more favorably disposed toward the new edition... the maps I've seen since then, going back to the map in the Cormyr article, have been far better products. Now, if WotC were to assemble a map of all of Faerun in that style at that scale, and make it available as a poster map,* I think they'd have a new Realms product that they'd have trouble keeping in stock... even I'd buy it, despite my dislike of the changes in the geography.
* - edit: Shipping it rolled in a tube, not folded, of course.

Wasn't I supposed to be involved in that? Or was that Markus's Sossal project?
We discussed 'strange musical instruments' based upon the locale (ice flutes?) and other musical lore for Sossal, and later I decided to merge what little I had with Coach's Cold Lands project, which I suppose means you were 'merged-in' as well without your knowledge.
That's right.
I suppose I'll dust off those old notes I started compiling then, back when this project was moving forward. |

does anyone have markus email, we were gonna start a huge project together involving sossal
handsome rob, when you are ready to make a Cold Lands/Bloodstone Lands map, PM me, i have a gigantic outline of all the mappable places in those countries, all canon but many not found on many of the main maps
You probably already know this by now, but Dungeon #177 has a map of Vaasa (and a little bit of southern Great Glacier, all of Thar, and east Damara). I believe most of the geography described is pre-Spellplague, and half the sites also. Of course, with the new positioning of the 4E Realms map, a little guesswork is needed to plant these on an earlier Realms map. Other than that, it's definitely much needed info to include on a all-encompassing Bloodstones map. |

Posted - 01 May 2010 : 01:48:44 Oh wow, welcome back Markustay! Yes, you definitely were missed. You and that wonderful geographic knowledge and artistry! LOL And as a previous poster said, where's my Kara-Tur map!? LOL j/k
I just posted on Running the Realms a project suggestion for incorporating geography that existed pre-Spellplague showing up in the 4E Realmslore articles of Dungeon Magazine. Not only reference info, but also stuff to include into a map (example, check Vaasa map in Dungeon #177).
Not a request from you, of course, but I bring it up as something to consider should you do decide to open up Photoshop once again. |

Posted - 30 Apr 2010 : 16:09:20 Geeze, as if my head wasn't swollen enough.
Thanks for the praise - I've had a strange and very coincidental set of circumstances bring my attention back to the Realms. I've been traveling quite a bit and have run into people still running the Realms - Kara Tur and Al Quadim on particular. In all cases their re-interest in the greater realms was generated about 2 yrs ago by a set of Map WIPs they saw online....
So it comes full-circle and here I am - I am still not home yet, but should be by the end of the weekend, and I feel the urge to open Photoshop back up for a spell.
HandsomeRob - no worries - I'm just glad someone else is still carrying the torch; this is a community after all, and FR is something we all help to add to. It deserves constant attention and should never be 'shelved'. Your work is excellent and a bit different then the direction I had begun heading in before my hiatus.
EDIT: Oh, and Thank You everyone for welcoming me back - it reminds me of why I came here in the first place. |

Posted - 30 Apr 2010 : 15:38:08 Hello Markus,
I hope you're not offended by me co-opting all of your wonderful work for my project. I was tremendously inspired by the work you did, and when it seemed like you would not be continuing I decided to try my hand at it.
You're an all-star, basically, and any thanks or praise that I get for the maps I've shared should totally go to you instead.
So thanks, and I'm glad you're back.
