Is there any info on the large continent south of Maztica? Or, how about the large island southeast of that continent? These areas seem ripe for adventure. Thanks in advance!

Ohhhhhh... he wrote-up Flying Monkeys... thats just crazy-sexy.

And I'm actually considering using it as a template right now - I'm thinking I like the idea of the entire central region being a raised (and somewhat rectangular) Palteau. Take all the sillines out, if you know what I mean, and apply some of that to real terrain.

Going by that globe-map, it almost seems like Oz would work for Osse if we just rotated the map 90ŗ counter-clockwise.

I could always go with Mcfarlane's 'dark' Oz, or even that abomination that was a TV mini-series (although it wasn't nearly as bad as the Flash Gordon one they totally butchered).

And I bring-up Flash Gordon because it relates to the topic, or at least the topic of my maps in general. I haven't gotten to the background piece for Sossal yet, but I'm thinking of basing at least some of it on Frigia, the Ice Kingdom, from the Flash Gordon series. We got so many 'loving and tender' women in FR, I think we need at least one Ice Queen.

Anyhow, no work on that, K-T, or even finishing the little left for this series Naked Old Empires (The Naked Empires? Sounds like something Ed would have had).
I had my kids for the weekend, and they always come first.

Well, I've actually come across a great concept for Osse - I even found an appropriate map... I just have to adapt it to Osse's coastal outline.

Actually... looking at that again... it almost works as-is.

Actually, I think Markus is on to something. Look at this topographical map:

http://mysite.verizon.net/restga8f/osse/

Notice the lines? They appear to be walls. Going back to map of Oz, notice the "X" shaped boundries that form the divisions of Oz?

Coincidence? I think not

On a side note, I also found these d20 and 4th edition conversions of OZ:

Can't argue with you there...
Markustay Posted - 13 Mar 2009 : 21:36:55
You got that right... except the lore of that land actually makes more sense...

I might have to 'silly it up' a bit for 4e.
Jakk Posted - 13 Mar 2009 : 21:30:25
Absolutely, if you're mapping post-Spellplague Osse...

As were many people, including myself... and now the Realms are permanently impressed with the aftermath of that, "like a boot stamping on a human face forever" to quote one of my favourite non-fantasy authors. Wizards of the Coast: purveyors of fine Orwellian fantasy since 2008. I am in no way blaming Brian for the Sellplague; I'm done with the blame game, and I'm done with bemoaning the loss of canon to my Realms (better that than the alternative loss). I continue to bemoan the loss of existing pre-Sellplague lore that can't be published due to ongoing eNDAnglement issues, but I'm trying to do so more quietly now.

Anyway, on a more positive note, Mark: How goes the world map, particularly (to keep on topic) Katashaka and Osse? Anything new to report? Maps make me happy, as long as they're either pre-Sellplague or not of any part of Toril... ...although Laerakond is a very interesting place... just don't call it anything with "Abeir" in the name, please.

Perhaps. It's more likely that when Rich Baker first encountered the "Grand History" PDF, which included some details about Katashaka, Wizards simply decided to canonise most of it as well.

These would be my thoughts as well.

Katashaka was the unofficial name Brian James used for one of his articles in the "Candlekeep Compendium," featuring lore about the dark continent located southwest of Faerūn. Since it survived editing, we've now learnt a little more about Katashaka in the Grand History of the Realms tome, where it has become canonised.

.

Heh, I wonder if Brian knew about it and simply kept it hush hush from the editors

And we are all better off for it

I played a few adventures there, my friend used mostly Nyambe, some parts of X'endrik for the colder south, and more lizards in the northern jungles

it was visited by a merchant fleet from Shou Lung

the Overpower was Ao

the cosmology also fits

I'd include the Mwangi Expanse from Pathfinder if I ever run another similar game
Markustay Posted - 01 Mar 2009 : 06:23:49
And I HIGHLY recommend the Nyambe setting for anyone wanting to flesh-out katashaka - its an excellent product.

I am working on a katashaka-version of the Nyambe map, but I haven't been back to it in awhile. Unfortunately its one of the back-burner projects, so I couldn't even begin to estimate when that might get done.

Shameless Plug:
However, I purposely went out-of-my-way to make sure the Nyambe lore linked-up perfectly with FR's lore in my (one and only) CKC article. The chain of islands lie off the coast between Maztica and Katashaka (and are probably in Abeir now ), and the various Sea-Gates were used to explain the myriad colonizations by different ethnic groups.

I'm particularily proud of the one I used to connect Mulhorand with Katashaka, so as to have Nyambe's 'Water People' covered.

Its called Katashaka, and no, there is no info (even less then Osse, which was at least mentioned in a novel). It has been suggesed by at least one designer that the Nyambe setting (D20) would be a perfect fit - it's Africanesque.
Like Tom Costa:- "I know several folks (myself included) who transplanted Atlas Games' excellent Nyambe (with some tweaks), which also built off many of the old 2E articles in Dragon on African gaming, to the large undefined continent southwest of Nimbral and southeast of Maztica (see the FR Atlas CD-ROM). It also makes sense with the Anaconda refernce you mention, but I doubt we'll see an official African-esque setting as most non-European-esque setting don't seem to sell too well from what we've been told.

So pick up Nyambe and watch the Shaka Zulu miniseries from the 80s and you'll be dying to play an African-based setting. I really can't say enough good things about how well conceived Nyambe is. Hey even Monte Cook gave it top grades."

That is so terrific, I picked Nyambe up out of the bargain bin for a measly five bucks! What a terrific book, and now I have a fantastic excuse to use it.

I love this place.

It's also mentioned* on page 30 of The Grand History of the Realms, in the side-bar on the Tarrasque (-2809 DR), as well (semi-unofficially) in the Candlekeep Compendium, volume 4.

*As in, name-dropped more than discussed.

The large island isn't named.

I had dubbed it Tabaxiland on a map (based on an erroneous entry in Races of Faerūn), but that's far from official.
