Interesting stuff about Hesperdan - I think that BOTH theories are correct.
Elminster does have access to the clone spell, does he not. 
If we really wanted to go far afield for Realms Villains, I could say Hazlik - he's cool because he is/was a villain in TWO settings.  |

For me the villain #1 is Zhengyi, the Lich King of Vaasa ... in my adapted version:
I am rewriting the adventures (in my head) for 3rd edition and changed his statistics to 10th level Necromancer, 10th level Warlock, 10th level Eldritch Theurge. His combat behaviour is kinda like the "Sith Lord" from Star Wars with dark energy crackling from his fingers and a dark cloak and a ton of overconfidence. |

As for why no one from the Realms has attacked France... Someone did try, years back, but ran -- rather unexpectedly -- into the Spanish Inquisition. And we all know that nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!  |

My reading being far less extensive than other scholars -- it took me almost a year to get the second book of Threat From the Sea, so I can't vote for Iakhovas because I have laid the trilogy aside while reading other books -- still, of the super-villains I have seen, I must go with Vhostym. He wants to become greater than a god and doesn't give a second thought to the possibility that he'll destroy a populous planet in the process; if that isn't super-villainy, I don't know what is.
What I'd like to know is why no Torilian villains have ever used gates to Earth to destroy France? After all, "Nobody ever picks Italy," as Hank Scorpio said....

I would have to say Manshoon, Sarya Dlardrageth, Jarlaxle, or Elaith (though the latter two could be considered anti-heroes). |

Hesperdan exists as a very powerful, shadowy figure within the Zhentarim who basically allowed Manshoon and now Fzoul to be the head honcho of the organisation [for reasons unknown] and that Elminster, knowing this, masquerades as Hesperdan on occasion to muck about with Zhent plots and personnel OR Elminster IS Hesperdan, using this guise to destabilize the Zhentarim on needful occasions. I’ll keep to hinting rather than confirming outright, but someone dwelling in the Realms who attended certain Magefairs would insist that El and Hesperdan are two separate people (because they were seen in the same place at the same time, though not actually standing and talking together). Which of course strengthens the “masquerading as” possibility (the other weakening further when one considers how hard it would be to do all that El does and still have time to put in any appearances as Hesperdan at all: a Zhent whose survival may well be imperilled, in such an authoritarian organization, by unexplained absences). Which in turn raises the why (exactly) is Elminster adopting the guise of Hesperdan, and also HOW is he managing it (is Hesperdan in cahoots with him? Under his total domination? Can be subsumed mentally, as El “takes over” the body, due to some already-cast spell or curse or . . .?
We just don’t know. Yet. I can let slip that Hesperdan has an important future role to play, but we may not see much of it “onstage,” as it were.
Which should leave a lot of scribes going: Hmmm.

I don't exactly think of him as an anti-hero, but I don't really think of him as a "boss villain", either. He is evil, and a criminal, but his particular schemes and goals don't really strike me as being those of a boss villain. |

My favorite? Tan Chin of course! The man (Lich) has been both a hero and then a villain, has had at least three other identities (that I have uncovered), and has existed in both the Imaskar and Shou Empires, and has become Emperors in both at different points in history,

My favorite boss villain is Tyranthraxus from the Pool of Radiance computer game and later novelization. A close second is Iakhovas from the Treat from the Sea trilogy by Mel Odom. |
