I concur. I think that any non-deity who can cast it makes bloody certain that no other being knows that, and a lich (a real 1st or 2nd edition lich!) or a demi-lich would have so many ways of disposing of curiosity-seekers that the spell would never be needed.
The reference to Larloch is intriguing. His personal obsession is gates and portals; the development of this spell might be the obsession of another lich or demi-lich (Xykon, for instance) who is just patiently accumulating experience and hit dice until the day he or she can cast it without auto-self-destruct, then BLAM! -- that obnoxious village which has been blocking his view for the past 600 years is just gone. Having accomplished his obsession he may thereupon perish, but them's the breaks when you're an evil, thousand-year-old spellcaster.
Then, too, a particularly vindictive deity may bestow the spell upon a free-willed mortal and suggest that the mortal go to a monastery of heretics and see how vile they are, and if the Chosen independently chooses to cast Vengeful Gaze of God, ... well ... it was a mortal what done it and the deity hasn't violated Ao's strictures about killing mortals.

For some reason this spell reminds me of Bigby's Tactical Crushing Nuke.
Ah, a personal favorite of mine. So much so that I've made a link to the appropriate comic on my Linkies! page. |

Yes... exactly!!! High Magic circle casting anyone? :) |

I don't play much with the epic rules, but I've heard of games run by friends of mine where people devise epic spells to give them +50 or +100 to spellcraft checks for, say, the next tenday or so. So I imagine you could utilize the same principle.
You'd probably still want to be 50th level at least, and you'd probably die in the casting (though I suppose there are continency spells), but you'd get (as a player) eternal bragging rights.
Cheers
There is perhaps a lich who could cast this spell and come back from it. Larloch comes foremost to my mind... |

Posted - 02 Apr 2008 : 22:38:33 id have to wonder why anyone would want to cast this spell. this spell to me is the last ditch effort that follows the if im going down , im taking you with me for the ride threat. and no character of mine can cast it. mostly because most of mine are fighter types. or druids, or clerics, very few mages none of them powerful enough.
hellball is good enough for me though.
better to create your own epic spell, or modify stark reality from ESIV: oblivion for an epic spell. |

It's an epic level spell. Check the stats here.
From that DC, I don't think any Faerúnian could cast it.
With a 200d6 backlash, I don't why any Faerûnian would cast it! |

Posted - 02 Apr 2008 : 19:45:06 With a Spellcraft DC that high, there aren't likely to be too many spellcasters -- if any at all -- that can cast it, at least by themselves. Keep in mind that some spells are nearly impossible to cast, but factors like taking your time and involving others can greatly reduce the DC (or improve the caster's Spellcraft; I don't recall which, but the end result is nearly the same).
I can't say I've heard of this spell, though. |
