Posted - 31 Mar 2008 : 00:06:01 As Fillow said, gnomes have not simply "disappeared" from 4E or from the FR campaign setting.
When they will be made into a player race (as opposed to simply being put in the MM) is the real question. |

I've been running realms campaigns for years and have largely ignored the sub-standard canon material (especially the novels) and favoured my own twist on events - It is fantasy, and fiction so events are free to be dictated by the DM.
I had a huge problem with half orcs in 3E, if we were going to have half orc core characters then why not half ogres, half giants, half fiends and half dragons, or to hell with it, half Kobolds, half stirges, half.... the list could go on (and probably does in parallel alternate reality or "crystal sphere" (remember them?))
Quite frankly come 4E (if i even decide to switch) I won't be welcoming Half Dragons or Dragontouched or whatever into my campaign, they don't fit in the realms - even Saurials didn't fit in the realms.
My patience is running thin with Wan*ers of the coast, I'm tired of events / characters / races being shunted changed and erased to suit whatever overpriced poor qualiity product they happen to be selling at the time. Oh so sudenly we only have 3 types of elf? So how is that going to fit into the dynamics of the existing realms? What next? Humans only come in 2 colours - White and slightly creamy pink colour?
PLEASE!
There is truth in your words.. And after all if the rules of 4th edition will not satisfy us why to use them ???why not continue playing 2nd oe 3.5 edition?? The choice is ours.. |

About D&D4, I believe I read that gnomes would be a playable race in ther next Monster Manual. About FR, Authors and creators cannot have erased this race from the ground of Toril ! Even if there is no hero who is equal to Drizzt or El within the Garl children, we sometimes meet few of them in novels. I think to a Helm priest in "Temple Hill", a community in Soldiers of Ice, the svirfs from Underdark, aso
Moreover, if the race was bound to disappear from Toril, I think we had heard about the gnome pantheon...
I agree to make an effort to a 100-years-jump, but I refuse to disappear !

I wonder whether presenting them as a "option" would've been more appropriate.
The rationale behind making dragonborn a core race is that the designers believe dragon characters will appeal to a lot of players (and they most likely have evidence that leads to such a conclusion).
But I would agree that just because a race is "core" doesn't mean there needs to be a very large number of them in any given setting. |

Which is kinda disappointing to hear, if that is the case.

It's likely that, as more information about the Dragonborn in the Realms is revealed... the purpose behind the decision to include them in FR 4e will become evident.

Yes, that is a good question...
Although, I'll admit that what bothers me the most is the clumsy way the dragonborn were forced into the setting (so many lands have never been detailed, but the designers HAD to erase one land to literally replace it with another?). |

It is. Granted, I find the dragonborn to be interesting, but I thought the explanation for "Why Dragonborn?" in R&C left something to be desired, because it basically said, "there's just something inherently interesting about dragon characters" as if that's self-evident. |

Maybe we can get all of them collected in one place, you know, like we do with other 'reference' material.
Mod edit: Added NSFW notation, for the link. I'd really prefer a bit more care to be exercised with such links.

When they didn't have to.
That one sentence pretty much sums up ALL of my feelings toward 4e FR.
Over 50% of Abeir-Toril remains completely un-developed, and at least another 25% hasn't been touched in an edition or two.
I think that the Spellplague/Abeir thing was just an 'easy-out' for them, that they would not have to wrap ANY lore around. I can perfectly understand wanting to make your life easier, but when your JOB is to develop LORE, and you figure out a way of not having to do it, doesn't that mean that setting designers are no longer neccessary?
The last thing I would want to do is prove to my bosses that what I do is not neccessary.
Anyway, we don't have a logo come 4e, ergo we ARE CORE, despite whatever BS they tell us. Settings get logos - its part of the IP, yet all we get is the 'umbrella D&D logo'. They say we are NOT core, we are the 'default setting'... and yet... aren't they the same thing?
Most upsetting - obviously we are getting everything in core, quite simply, because we ARE.
And we all know what happened to last 'Core' setting....... |

When they didn't have to.
That's the part that sticks in my maw.
These changes could have been done in a consistent and logical manner. I know because half of my campaign archs have been because I read a bit of lore that didn't make sense to me and I had to figure out why it would make sense. That's actually when I've been the most creative, IMO, when I have to monkey around with things in order to keep the verisimilitude. |

Since there's now a whole nation of them, the answer is likely yes.
I still don't know why they did not just create a story of how the 3e Dragonborn became the 4e Dragonborn in the Realms, instead of using the same name for different races and the really bad plot as to how they just ended up with a nation shoved on top of Unther through random lottery. I think the biggest problem with the 4e Realms (aside from the unnecessary and hasty destruction of certain people/places/et cetera) is that they are asking to suspend our disbelief in unbelievable ways. |

I recall hearing (but don't quote me on it) that drow and genasi will be introduced for 4E in the FRCG. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn out to be "core races".
You mean, much like they introduced the drow (and other elven subraces) plus the various planetouched et al in the FRCS? Nothing new then. Though one might see them in the MM 4E anyways ... unless it is reserved for "monsters only".
No, it really isn't anything new.
As for gnomes, they supposedly will appear in the Monster Manual. That does not mean, however, that they will never be a player race, it just means you'll have to wait for them to show up as a player race. |
