Posted - 08 Apr 2005 : 02:06:00 Greetings to all, I know this topic sort of sounds silly and laughable. But can I inquire the forum members what is the most terrible situation any character can face. It can be any imagined scenario or game based, please feel free to publish your views or replies (it can be realistic/amusing/sad or whatever it is). Your replies would be appreciated greatly. For me, well the most terrible situation a character such as Vorian can face is against a foe that is beyond his own shadow abilities to counter. I know the example above sort of sound silly but are there any greater scenarios than what I mentioned? Thanks to any who reply. |

Greetings Fletcher, that's certainly an amusing, truly amusing and most will-breaking situation I have ever heard. Nice situation to pit the best heroes to the test.
I'd love to take credit for thinking them up, but I was the poor sap who had to live through those decisions.
In the first, the dwarven cleric cast a spell that let me walk through the stone walls and bypass the angry demon. I saved the city, but the demon still killed my character in the end.
In the second I pulled both levers and ended up killing both of them. The evil bugger then dropped my character off in a slavers pit on the Pirate Isles. I then spent the next six character levels, and fourteen years of my character's life getting revenge. |

Posted - 05 May 2005 : 00:09:13 Here is a situation for a character. Have them make a decision, where every choice available hurts some one/thing they care about/love. "You have to give that drow General a virgins soul for him to let you pass to capture the villain who has an artifact that will sink your home nation into the seven realms of baator! You only have 1 hour before the artifact destroyes your home!"
"But sir, I am a Paladin and am sworn to do no such thing!"
or evil architect creates a devious torture for his captured foe...
"Pull this lever and your daughter dies, freeing your wife and yourself. Pull the other leve and your wife dies, freeing your daughter and yourself. Pull neither one in 1 minute and they both die! Bwaa haa haa haa!"

Posted - 16 Apr 2005 : 11:38:30 How could I missed this interesting topic? well, I say the most terrible situation is when one is engaged in a hot situation where a fighter/mage is surrounded by numerous foes and yet is desperate for a toilet as the need to answer the call of nature is simply too great! Just for amusement. |

Posted - 15 Apr 2005 : 21:43:05 Well, welll, ghengiskhan...
This remember me of that fateful game session... all the players involved in a nasty battle... after several rounds of combat, the enemie falls, and the heroes finally can rest. But the galant and honorable paladin of the group died in the battle... in a great moment of charity and leadership, Joseph Steelheart, priest of Tchazzar (character of ghengiskhan) declares to the group:
"Stay calm, noble fellows. With the autority of the religious leader of our brotherhood, I will take care of the funeral of our galant paladine..."
After this, the cleric put the body in a great bag (this is the right term?), dug a improvised tomb and... desnecessary to say... some minutes later, the group was taking part in the burial of a bag full of rocks... and nobody wonder in what thing Joseph carrie in that big bag in his back...
And the group have some juicy meat dinners all the way back to Waterdeep....
I think that little "game memory" deserves go to the "Stupid thing a character have done" thread, with the title "Never die if you have a cannibal in your group", or "check the references of the gourmet!!!" |

Posted - 14 Apr 2005 : 18:09:40 Well... talking for my character (a dwarven fighter, future dwarven fighter/dwarven defender), the most terrible thing will be to fail to their friends in a combat... for me, anyone caught in a situation, without nothing to do to help the others is very terrible...
And don´t worry, Genghiskhan... your characters will stay very wel... er... until the next game session... hehehe... |

As a canibalist it would be the most terrible situation for him. As for other characters. Hida Sougirou i would be betray his clan. For Garr Ladon i would be kill his loved ones. As far as i can see, it depends from character to character.
P.S.: Sorry for any misspeling. My english its a little rusty!
No worries... Some of our native English-speakers are prone to misspellings.
For one of the characters I played, a terrible situation would be running out of beer! |

Posted - 13 Apr 2005 : 11:40:02 I think there is a really bad fate:
Imagine someone, let's say a fighter. He is young and strong and decides to take up the battle against evil (because evil gyus have burnt his village or killed a loved one or generally has touched his life in an unpleasant manner...). In his adventures, he destroys a representative of evil, only to realize that this person was holding the only way to defeat the forces of evil, if only he was persuaded to do so...and then watch the Legions of Doom march and destroy... |

As for my own thoughts on it, I would say, complete and utter ruination... Being forced to sit and actually watch (in a helpless state) while all of your friends/family/loved ones are cruelly executed, and then all your worldly belongings are torn asunder/obliterated. (this includes but isn't limited to items on the person, items stashed somewhere, home(s), lands (sewn with salt?), Everything.) then being informed that all this was brought upon you, over a slight the character made against the wrong person, who made it their own passion to ruin them. Then being crippled (permanent physical crippling) and then just being left in that state. With absolutely nothing but the pain of loss, and the knowledge you can't do anything to recover it.

Hmm. This happened to a character in the movie I watched last night.
Sure makes you hate the villains, though, don't it? |

Posted - 09 Apr 2005 : 16:02:36 How's about being gifted with complete immunity to all scrying, so that a crazy and bitter god can't find you, only to be imprisoned within a large block of amber and hidden in a long forgotten ruin by the followers of another crazy, bitter (and dead) god?
One of my players was once influenced to take up a battle axe that was crafted using the soul of a mighty barbarian chieftain. He was then influenced by his paladin friend -- actually a disguised erinyes seeking redemption in the eyes of her Devil-Queen -- to take up the axe. He was then compelled by axe and friend alike to murder a powerful spellcaster they had been travelling with.
Not long after this murder, the band said pc was travelling with found themselves in a lawless tavern with a great battle about to break out between three or four opposing sides. Fearing rival spellcasters he took up "the axe" again. And while he did slaughter the rival spellcasters, quickly, he next found himself turning on his female spellcaster friend and watched helplessly as he hewed her down.
He would have killed his best friend too, if not for the timely internvention and thoughtful actions of a more experienced warrior. |

Posted - 09 Apr 2005 : 01:17:41 The most terrible situation I've seen is a rogue PC made an already grumpy wizard PC grumpier by an attempted theft. All of a sudden the barbarian PC walks in sees the wizard picking on his thief friend and then the fighting starts. Spells and fists are thrown and all hell is breaking loose. Thank God for quick-thinking PCs and friendship potions . |

In general, I'd say that the most terrible situation would be for the character to be helpless while someone or something he or she loves is suffering or destroyed.
If I take this one step farther I can describe what just happened to my most beloved character, Borin Goldmallet (Paladin/Dwarven Defender)..... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Early in his adventuring days (level 3-4) Borin fell victim to a wicked spell of domination. While under this magical compulsion Borin was forced to murder innocents and destroy the lives of enemies when they were helpless and sleeping. This happned to Borin twice during early career and both times it devestated him that he could turn into such a monster.
Than when Borin was much more experienced and felt he was able to fight off such magical charms it happened to him again. Only this time his enchanter compelled him to smite the very party he defends with his life. Borin was powerless to resist and began absolutely hammering his adventuring companions.
When the fight looked grim his enchanter escaped via translocation magic and ended the command to kill his party, he figured it was a tool he could use another day. Borin however had been under this influence before and realized this type of domination could last days. He begged the party priest to dispel it but it was beyond his powers. So, being the champion of good that he was Borin could no longer stomach the possibility of hurting his loved ones. Borin drew his mighty Stormblade (+1 Shocking Waraxe) and smote himself (Coup De Grace). So ended the career of Borin Ironspear Goldmallet II .
------------------------------------------------------------
So, the situation here was the character himself causing the people he loved to suffer and he was powerless to do anything about it. It was a VERY frustrating thing to have been dominated 3 times but we really didn't have the resources to prevent it. I have since made a new character because Borin was to shamed to be resurrected. But that was hands down the worst thing that ever happened to one of my characters.
The second worst thing would probably be when a Gnomen Cleric of Gond failed his save after being bitten by a werewolf. It caused for one night of murder but after that the party took care of it with out a real problem. |

I would add to this to make it worse.
Then to find out that after the fact there was something simple you could of done. That you knew you could do, but had forgotten in the stress of the moment.
The time that shiny red bauble you picked up could have turned off all the traps when activated. But you didnt do it, thinking it itself was a trap. Then told that your friend had died and your own inaction, by the evil power behind the dungeon. |
