Posted - 14 Jun 2007 : 19:24:32 I am currently playing an evocation specialist wizard and I recently found a lesser rod of maximize, which I have enjoyed using. Anyway, this got me thinking about getting a rod of quicken once I can save up enough gold. That train of thougt led me to casting Evard's Black Tentacles followed up by a quickened fireball. Grappled characters are denied their DEX to AC, but does being grappled affect your reflex saves at all? It seems like it should, but I couldn't find it in writing. |

A helpless character takes a -4 penalty to AC against melee attacks, but no penalty to AC against ranged attacks.
A helpless defender can’t use any Dexterity bonus to AC. In fact, his Dexterity score is treated as if it were 0 and his Dexterity modifier to AC as if it were -5 (and a rogue can sneak attack him).
quote: Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No
This spell conjures a field of rubbery black tentacles, each 10 feet long. These waving members seem to spring forth from the earth, floor, or whatever surface is underfoot—including water. They grasp and entwine around creatures that enter the area, holding them fast and crushing them with great strength.
Every creature within the area of the spell must make a grapple check, opposed by the grapple check of the tentacles. Treat the tentacles attacking a particular target as a Large creature with a base attack bonus equal to your caster level and a Strength score of 19. Thus, its grapple check modifier is equal to your caster level +8. The tentacles are immune to all types of damage.
Once the tentacles grapple an opponent, they may make a grapple check each round on your turn to deal 1d6+4 points of bludgeoning damage. The tentacles continue to crush the opponent until the spell ends or the opponent escapes.
Any creature that enters the area of the spell is immediately attacked by the tentacles. Even creatures who aren’t grappling with the tentacles may move through the area at only half normal speed. Material Component
A piece of tentacle from a giant octopus or a giant squid.
Overall I would say if grappled, you are bound and Reflex save is at -5, though you can still save. Do as you will.

Actually, you aren't helpless if you are grappled, only if you are pinned. Also, the -5 is not a penalty to AC, rather it indicates the Dex modifier added to your AC. Since your Dex is treated as a 0 when helpless, the Dex modifier that you add to your AC changes to -5. For example, if your DEX score is an 18, then your Dex modifier to AC is a +4, when helpless this changes to a -5, which effectively gives you a -9 penalty to AC. |
