Posted - 07 Apr 2007 : 01:58:50 So I've been playing with the idea of making up some affiliations for FR religions, especially as a guide to where and when a character would gain their titles in the faith. I started working with the Church of Akadi, and wanted to get some feedback on it.
I feel like I gave out a few too many powers over the course of the progression, but at the same time, I wanted to make sure to get all of the ranks in as part of the progression.
Let me know what you think of this, so I can kind of fine tune what I am doing here. And thanks to Eric Boyd and our very own Dargoth for coming up with some of these FR affiliations to show how cool an idea this can be. |

F&A says : " Upon undergoing a personally designed rite of empowerment supervised by at least two senior clergy (and usually involving flying), they become full priests." Has this rite been canonly explained by the past ? Maybe in a novel ?
I don't recall any specific explanation for the rite. Divine rites and rituals aren't something that have received a great deal of attention in the Realmslore. Aside from basic references in the three main deity books [Faiths & Avatars, Demihuman Deities, and Power & Pantheons], and a few other sources, most of what we now know about particular religious rites and rituals of the various faiths come directly from Ed, here at Candlekeep.

And another question : F&A says also : "Spelljamming is looked upon favorably by the faith, since it spreadds the world of Akadi to distant places." What is spelljamming ? Airship travelling ? What do the both words (spell-jamming) mean ?.... OK about "spell" ! But "Jamming" ?
Thanks a lot for reading.
Fillow, you'll likely find this page to be of some interest.

I'm proud to make you feeling younger Wooly ! How could you define "jamming" ? I'd like to translate it into French. The French editor's translators kept he English word. It does not look beautiful to see a foreighn word in a sentence. Do you see what I mean ? Not an attack to the English language !
Hmmm... I don't know how easily it would translate. "Jam", in English, usually means to forcibly put something somewhere, or it can mean a difficult place/situation to get out of. However, the term "windjammer" refers to sailing ships, and spelljammers are ships that sail in space (windjammers move by wind, spelljammers move by spell). So I'd go with a word that means "sailing". |

Posted - 23 Apr 2008 : 20:20:40 I don't recall seeing anything about that rite in print... With it being personally designed by the prospective priest, I'd imagine that each rite is fairly unique, though certain elements (such as flying) would often occur in such rites.
Spelljamming comes from Spelljammer, a 2E campaign setting. Without going into too many details, it took D&D into space. It also allowed characters from different campaign settings to travel between the settings, so a Krynnish (Dragonlance) elf could go to Oerth (Greyhawk), pick up a couple of dwarves, and then all of them could come to the Realms.
It remains my D&D first love. |

Posted - 07 Apr 2007 : 06:39:17 Player's Handbook II is where the rules for affiliations were first mentioned. Eric Boyd has done some affiliations for the Realms in his Realms conversions for the Savage Tide adventures in Dungeon Magazine, with affiliations for the Knights of the Flying Hunt, the Rundeen, and House Se'Sehan. |

Posted - 07 Apr 2007 : 06:09:56 Hello-
I like the information in the general sense - but i am unfamiliar with where the Affiliations idea was started. Is there some reference to it in a sourcebook somewhere?
Thanks!

Posted - 07 Apr 2007 : 05:42:58 Id consider adding one that gives a magic item to the player either an item that allows the character to fly or if the player can already fly an item that improves its manuverablity |

Posted - 07 Apr 2007 : 03:39:26 I'm already starting to wonder if one "fix" might not be to assume that anyone that is going to participate in the greater church as an affiliation should be assumed to have flown with the aid of another higher level cleric, which would move the fledgling "rank" out of the list, and move the Winged One up to the unaffiliated status, and then just explain that someone interested in becoming involved in the overall church should have the initiation performed first.
If this is the case, I'd likely drop either the Sirocco bonus as it stands or the Whirlwind one.
The other option is that I'm thinking of consolidating the 10% discount on magic items for both costs instead of loosing either one of the above, since the magic item has to use a spell with the air descriptor or allow flight in order to gain the bonus, and the normal discount benefit is an across the board discount on all types of magic items.

Posted - 07 Apr 2007 : 02:05:53 The Church of Akadi
Symbol: A white cloud, often on a blue background
Background, Goals, and Dreams: Much of the background and goals of the church of Akadi can be found in the 2nd Edition product Faiths and Avatars and the 3rd edition supplement Faiths and Pantheons. In general, they favor change, self discovery, and the opposition of Grumbar and creatures of elemental earth.
Enemies and Allies: Akadi's greatest enemy is Grumbar, Lord of Elemental Earth, although the Elemental Princes of Earth are also among her enemies as well. Aerdrie Faenya, Quorlin, Remnis, Shaundakul, Stillsong, Stronmaus, Syranita are all allies of Akadi, and their priesthoods tend to be allied to, or at least favorably disposed toward, Akadi.
Members: Not every divine caster or worshiper of Akadi is a member of the Church of Akadi, and some worshipers of Akadi that are not divine casters are indeed active in the church as an organization. The Chuch of Akadi is only a loose organization, and it has no specific head. Favors, promotions, and tasks are usually passed along among the regional clergy, and rarely does the entire church take on a specific task. Once per year, at Midsummer, when the faithful converge on the First Shrine, this is the only time the the church is likely to even begin to deal with overall matters of concern to the faith, and this is a rare occurance.
Tribal worshipers (such as shaman of the Tuigan or isolated tribes of aaracokra and raptorans) are rarely active members of the church as a whole, and there are adventuring members of various races that can naturally fly but are not divine casters, as well as some arcane casters, that may be active members of the church.
Most active members of the church have made the trip to the First Shrine, but there are some clerics that have been active in church activities and its structure for years whose only connection to the larger church is a master or former master that carries news and information from the Midsummer meeting back to them at some point during the year.
