Posted - 30 Jun 2006 : 08:44:28 During my last two campaigns I have used the Zhentarim, once as protagonists (the PC's were members in our first ever evil-campaign) and in the other campaign they were the major villains of the campaign. For those campaigns I did an extensive amount of Zhentarim research and I'm a bit tired of the Zhentarim...I know, it sounds odd coming from somebody with my screenname. But for my next campaign I want to do something different different and use the other cliche realms villains...the Red Wizards of Thay.
Most of the people in my group are not Realms-junkies like myself so I don't think that they will worry about them being cliche and I think it will actually be good for them in order to learn more about the realms.
That being said, before I run a game that focuses on a group, I like to know that group inside and out. So, finally, to my question...
What are the best sources of information regarding the Red Wizards of Thay?
I have access to every 3/3.5E book and a bunch of 2E stuff, though most of the 2E stuff is based around the Zhentarim such as Cloak and Dagger, Ruins of Zhentil Keep, etc...
So, I know they have a write-up in the FRCS and Lords of Darkness. I'm assuming there is some info in Unapproachable East and I figure there may be stuff in Champions of Ruin. Other than these sources, where should I look?
Other than sourcebooks, which novels can people recommend to me to become knowledgeable on the motivation, goals, and tactics of the Red Wizards of Thay?
Thanks in advance... |

Dear Big Al,
I have the text, as well as some other files produced by Sleyvas (all 2nd Edition rules) on my hard drive. I managed to google the Treatise on Thay - only one website come up: http://members.tripod.com/~trauma2/atreatiseonthay.txt . The original author is a member of Candlekeep forums (Sleyvas), and would probably be the one to talk to.
Well met
Thank ye, Thauramarth. I'll get right on the case |

He also created some additional noble families. I downloaded his writings in .doc format a long time ago, and I do not know if these are available anymore on the web...

Hmmmm, i'd certainly be interested in taking a look at this, Thauramarth. I don't believe we have this tome here at Candlekeep (although it does ring a bell)

Posted - 30 Jun 2006 : 21:25:21 I've found that the best Thay source is the Dreams of Red Wizards as was mentioned before. Not that expensive either if you shop around. |

Lords of Darkness, the 1e and 2e campaign box sets, the FRCS, Unapproachable East. Cloak & Dagger might have some info as well. |

Well, there is the 1ed Dreams of the Red Wizards, and the 2ed box set Spellbound. Ed's short stories and novels have a few glimpses of Thayan thought and there was one early Harper book (which I have not red) that deals with the Red Wizards.
This was from memory, so I have probably missed several sources.
Thanks for the info...
Do you happen to remember the title of the Harper novel deals with the Red Wizards? |
