Alright, in an earlier thread, I explained the quest (long term) that the one of my player's druid/rogue has inherited, involving either saving Meilikki's son's soul from Malar, or ressurrecting him outright (See this thread):

http://www.candlekeep.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5087

What I want to know is, where should he have been from? The timeline that he would have had to have been active would have to have been after the Harpers were formed, but several hundred years ago. Anyone have any ideas on where a half divine ranger such as this might have hailed from?

About the plague though... what are you looking at exactly? As I see, to start a rivalry between Mielikki and Malar and also to force her to a point where her son would need to take her followers to another world, the plague would have to affect her (or perhaps her worshippers) in such a way as to provoke such sharp response from her.

How about something that transforms her followers into primal creatures motivated only by bloodlust and a savage heart... Malar's plague perverts the natural course of Mielikki worship altering the worshipper base and turning them into the very thing they are supposed to be warding the forests against. Thus, in order to save what you can, and keeping with in the spirit of nature... she orders her son to take what followers remain uncorrupted and set the seeds for a new faith on another world.

The new faith blossoms, and Mielikki arrives to accept the new worshipper base in the Realms.

I originally was thinking more of a world event like what happened to Faerie at the begining of Evermeet, so that it really has nothing specific to do with Malar, and his and Mielikki's rivalry is kind of a side issue when she has her son lead followers to a safe new world, but I'll have to think on this one, as its a pretty interesting idea.

Sorry, yes, part of what I was looking for was just in general where the original settlers might have come through with Mielikki's son, and as I started brainstorming, I got off track. I'll be sure to check in there, since I have that reference, and thanks for chiming in.

And thanks Kuje for setting me more or less down this path to begin with . . .

During the disaster, Mielikki's son helped to guide her followers to a glade that would transport them to another world to safety. One of the side stories I thought of was that Malar was an interloper deity that had started to plague this prime, and thus there started a rivalry between Mielikki and Malar before she even had a presense in the Realms . . . what do you think so far?

Sounds like a great idea for a campaign KEJR. Good stuff!

In finnish mythology Mielikki is the goddess of forests and hunting. She is the wife of Tapio (finnish version of Silvanus). Tapio has a daughter called Annikki who is the goddess of nighttime (not certain if her mother is Mielikki).

Hmm, being a semidivine son of Mielikki he might have spent all those years just wandering the "Far Corners of the World", especially its ancient woodlands. Another idea - perhaps he even went to Sildeyuir - the Realm of the Star Elves?

You might even consider modeling him after Kullervo from the Finnish mythology - a tragic hero type that heavily influenced Tolkien's tale of Turin Turambar.

Maybe from an area of the Realms that worships Meilikki, from a few hundread years in the past. Maybe a human from Cormanthor?

Hm . . . its an interesting twist, but if I add one more evil cult or power group (well, besides the Cult of the Dragon), I think the player of the party barbarian will have an aneurism (he's the only one that wasn't familiar with the Realms beforehand, and while he is having a blast, he intentionally played a barbarian so he wouldn't have to keep anything complex in mind . . . just aim himself toward evil and hack).

Grin.... well you can build on that.... maybe a worshipper of Loviatar is part of the Cult and he/she is the only one who knows the "truth."

But then, I'm devious and like to make threads that build on top of other threads. :)

Any other thoughts out there?

Hells, you could even have Loviatar be the one who betrayed him and she was the one who allowed, I.E. tipped off, Malar, which allow him to capture Mielikki's son. :)

Maybe he followed his mother from the Finnish pantheon when she and Loviatar came to Realmspace. On the way, he was captured by Malar and killed?

So you could have him come from Earth, or any other planet that you decide on. :)
