Posted - 31 Aug 2005 : 03:37:18 I'm pretty sure this isn't covered in the RAW anywhere, and I'm at a standstill on what to do.
Some of you may have seen my thread on WotC's board about my campaign, but for those that haven't here's a quick background........ Tifvus (my b/f's PC Wiz5/Lore8) due to a magical event, was ripped from the world of Greyhawk and literally dropped into Faerun. He now has some knowledge skills that no longer apply, ie:Knowledge(history, the planes, etc.). He has been in Faerun for almost 2 months, studying first at the Herald's Holdfast for a month, and is now in Silverymoon.
Here's what I need opinions on...how do we figure out ranks for his skills for Faerun? In the interest of "reality" we have both decided that he can't use his full 16 ranks of history knowledge, etc. for Faerun, because it is Greyhawk knowledge and he hasn't been here that long. On the other hand I don't want to nerf the amount of ranks he has, because he earned them.
Any opinions on this are welcomed......I need all the help I can get

Posted - 09 Sep 2005 : 14:39:49 Hey, that last remark makes the games worth their weight in gold. My wife and I run games for each other, and have been doing so for about 4 years. We both have our games fine-tuned to what we like, I have forgotten half the time what goes on in the group games that I run. Oh well, I think women are masterful GMs....

Ah well, keeps me coming back to the table.

This is why I don't let my wife check out this board... too many spoilers are spilled here!

And I am willing to continue playing Tifus, or starting his son at low level, you had said that it was for a fairly high level character, and so I was just going to make his son at a higher lvl then normal.
At anyrate, I do wish to continue playing the story arc, weather as Tifus, or as his son, and as C-FB said, Tifus does have problemes with getting side tracked from time to time... Remember his Shop? Not to mentchion that he Loves to Teach, and to create magical Items. |

Posted - 02 Sep 2005 : 16:10:05 Those sound good . My b/f was talking about just having Tifvus become a teacher at the Lady's College in Silverymoon, so that might just work. Maybe have Tifvus be the resident "expert" on non-Toril worlds....hmmm. Thanks alot for the help, I haven't had alot of time to think about it lately with work getting ready to start again . |

Posted - 02 Sep 2005 : 14:51:38 Well, have his son start out around 4th level, on the cusp of having 3rd level spells... And you could always have his son take up the quest, because Tifvus always got sidetracked and now he is too wrapped up in Faerunian politics to have the time to track this ancestor's stuff down. You could also have it as his test to prove his ability to his father, your b/f's orig. character. Do any of these sound good, or am I just way off?

Posted - 02 Sep 2005 : 06:31:42 Yes, he is planning on a wizard, but he wants to start off fairly high, because he doesn't really like the whole "learning proccess that low level characters go through. The staff and the spellbooks "belonged" to the ancestor. The arc was for Tifvus to work his way along the Sword Coast gathering info about the ancestor, and then travel to the ruined tower to find the stuff (and the Yuan-Ti that had taken up residence). I've been trying to think of another campaign, but it takes a while, lol. |

Posted - 02 Sep 2005 : 02:36:21 Well, is your b/f character's son going to be a wizard like his father? Then what you could do is start hinting about the quest to find these spell books in the early levels of his game. From there you could work him up to the level where he might be able to find the means (and a strong fighter buddy) to go get them. :)

Posted - 01 Sep 2005 : 15:33:40 Well, if it had only been weeks, I wouldn't be as bummed. I have actually been working on it off and on for months . I have a hard time comming up with campaign ideas, so this one was easy to work on because it already had a start with the transport and the learning. So I have no idea what to do for his son, and I also have a really nice staff, and quite a few ancient spellbooks that I'm not sure what to do with, (not going to give them to Tifvus like was originally planned). |

Posted - 01 Sep 2005 : 14:42:22 Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! I had a player of mine do that mid-way through a campaign I had worked for weeks on. One game session, in like the 4 game session, he told the group he was bored of this character.
I can imagine in a one-on-one campaign (I run for my wife all the time), it is especially bad - but at least, you get to run a whole campaign in the Realms!

Posted - 01 Sep 2005 : 06:04:27 Thanks Kuje and Crennen for your help and comments. My b/f has pretty much decided that he wants to retire Tifvus, retro his arrival about 100 years, and have him just travel the Realms. He kinda wants to maybe run a campaign for Tifvus' son. So....if he does that, the whole story arc I had worked up would be done OOC, because of how he plays Tifvus. He doesn't want to RP through the learning proccess that it will take for Tifvus to get his skills back to what they are now. *sigh* So it looks like I'm starting all over with a new campaign.

Posted - 31 Aug 2005 : 15:30:27 CrennenFaerieBane, that's kinda what we were working towards. Tifvus will probably be traveling to Candlekeep anyway....looking for information about an ancestor of his . He has said that he wants to find a way back, so it really doesn't make sense to roll them over, unless I just keep track of the difference.

Posted - 31 Aug 2005 : 14:40:21 And you could always gradually just allow him his full use of the skills he has already - sort of like the more months he spends in the Realms, the more access he has to his full amount of skill points that he's spent. If his character just studies for months, he should be able to get his skills to the same level fairly fast. And since he is a high level character, you could always take him to Candlekeep and let him read there, or a library of Deneir.

Aye. If it was me DM'ing I'd just keep those five ranks and then when he leveled turn it into a different knowledge skill, which he could then add more ranks to while letting the greyhawk one lapse unless he returned to greyhawk. |

Posted - 31 Aug 2005 : 04:09:16 I'd quarter or half his knowledge skills.... or give him a quarter or half circumstance bonus from his greyhawk skills that could be used on his new FR knowledge skills...... Or you could quarter or half the greyhawk skills and make them FR skills. I.E. 16 ranks in Knowledge history of Greyhawk could give him 4 to 8 ranks in Knowledge history of Faerun......
Dunno kinda hard to say. I'm assuming you are using the new cosmology as well? If you use the old one then it's not as hard to come up with an answer since Greyhawk's sphere was just one of the many spheres of the same cosmology but now it's a whole seperate cosmology. :) |
