How does this in general rule?
it is clear that no large creature can ride on a medium or smaller creature.
but can a medium size creature ride on a medium size mount?
Does it depend on the amount of legs ( i.e. minimum 4 )??

I'd be inclined to let a bugbear ride something akin to a destrier, but not a palfrey. Maybe a draft horse could be considered Huge so the half-ogre could ride something like a Clydesdale or Belgian perhaps?

Dwarves are a bit tricky, technically size M yet also similar to size S. For dwarves, some M-sized weapons are 2-handed, some L-sized (2-handed) weapons cannot be used, certainly not longbows (at least not from normal standing position). Can ride ponies and donkeys, but not horses (not comfortably, anyways).
Bugbears and half-ogres are similarly tricky. Technically size M yet really close to size L. Can wield many L-sized weapons (like 2-handed swords or halberds) in one hand. Can only ride the largest warhorses, perhaps. |

Well four legs do have greater carrying capacity. In general indeed mount needs to be one size larger then the rider. A complete answer however is looking at mount carrying ability and weight of the rider. It is possible a small could carry a medium, though I consider that unlikely. I am fairly sure that you can find medium being a mount for a rider the same size. |

I believe the mount has to be at least 1 size larger than the rider. Some creatures have explicit stats for carrying creatures or equipement, but I think any 4-legged creatures large enough could serve as mounts if trained (i.e. dire wolf, worg, dire boar). Bipedal creatures wouldn't make effective (and comfortable) mounts, but could be strong enough to carry you around (i.e. golem, giants), but I think it would be a stretch to call these "mounts".
I wouldn't allow a medium-sized mount for a medium creature. Just like I wouldn't allow a hill giant to ride a horse (eat it, yes, but not ride it). |
