Just noticed that according to Faiths and Pantheons Kossuth has a favoured weapon of spiked chain. Given that spiked chain is a 3.x invention which I have banned from my realms, what lore is out there to support a different favoured weapon for Kossuth? I looked in Faiths and Avatars, but could not find anything to support any weapon over another.

Hey leave the talking about Kossuth to the specialist here!
Black Flame Zealots use kukris and the occasional poisoned dagger and of course flames lots of them

Something (can't remember what) says that the chain was selected because it was the closest thing to Kossuth's real weapon a tentacle of flame
But if you don't want to use it choose anything that resembles fire

The best symbolic weapon used by worshippers would probably be a wavy blade, as others have said, but fire would be preferable. Some sort of ritualistic burning of the body ( even a slight singe ) would probably be involved if possible.

There could of course also be of-shot cults where any such violent use of the holy flame would be seen as the uttermost blasphemy.

I'd go for a Kris(wavy bladed dagger)
I really don't think spiked chain fits with the motif though or even belongs in the game at all. I realize it's a fantasy but some weapons that have been added are just ridiculous.
You could have them wield some kind of flaming torches or a hollow morning star filled with oil(which could get a little messy but what's a 3rd degree burn in the name of the Fire Lord)

I would also say flaming swords would definitely be on the list.

Whips while kinda like a tongue of flame are just not the motif I see Kossuth having(More Lovitar).

I like Kossuth as a deity he has some great potential for story lines

The Black Flame Zealots use kukris... I'd use those as official weapons of the faith...

I am actually thinking about not having a favoured weapon after seeing the comments, but might tweak the fire domain so that produce flame is actually the 1st level spell. The have Flaming Sphere be the 2nd level spell and drop burning hands from the fire domain list.

Anything I have suggested overpowered or unbalanced ?

The spiked chain was chosen because it was conceived as a "tendril of flame."

Your obvious choices would then be a whip, or a morning star (closest to a spiked chain in 2nd Edition, and fitting with rules for Clerics to boot).

Flaming oil is of course an option for ranged attack, as ShadezofDis recommended.

Ha! I banned that weapon too!

Besides, I do not quite understand why it would be the favorite weapon of Kossuth, him being a fire elemental that usually does not even use weapons at all....

Other than that, the old lore supports 'bludgeoning weapons' but no specific one. I would deem a mace, flail or morningstar to be fitting, resembling the 'mighty fists of Kossuth'. Even more so once the weapon has been enchanted with the 'burning' ability.

I think it'd be a bit more fun if it were along the lines of molotov cocktails.

The Firewalkers, as specialty priests of Kossuth, do utilise bludgeoning weapons however. Though, a specific bludgeoning weapon is not listed. But this could reflect some martial part of the Kossuthan faith with respect to weaponry or weapon-types.

There is one recent weapon I can think of related to Kossuth Sage. It is found in Rich Baker's Thar article. The orcs of "The Burning Daggers" use it as a symbol for Kossuth: a Dagger (obviously...from their name )

Then there are Kossuth's priestly assassins...don't remember their name off hand and have packed away nearly anything not related to 1st Edition Realms a couple of days ago...but I'm pretty sure they use the Dagger too.

Heh, good point.

Remember too that a priest doesn't have to use his deity's favored weapon.

Daggers could resemble tongues of flame, as could the tines of a trident, or the spikes on the head of a flail. Just a couple of ideas.
