My brother just brought a new D&D group in and they would like to start a war campaign against the Sothsillian Empire plagueing the merchants in Amn. I am very lacking in knowledge on Amn, especially it's army. If anyone can help me I need the estimated number of troops available, the names of nome ruling noble houses, and possibly well known generals or any other helpful military related info on the land of merchants.

The little-spoken of Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II features many locations throughout Amn in great detail. I'd recommend getting hold of it if at all possible. |

In regards to the number of troops, you also have to take into account that there is a span of a couple years between the first numbers and the second numbers which includes some offensives by both sides and the push that the combined army finally made against the sothsillian empire to push their current borders back to pretty much just around the city and part of the hills.. I'm sure they lost a lot of their troops in those loses.... not to mention the attacks by the stingers against them too... |

Neither I. My guess was that they changed it due to some error beforehand with the ogre language (Im not intending to impose that you are bad at naming Ogres, Mr. Schend). I'd have to say I liked the old name more; Sythillis just sounds more akin to the Ogre magi, where as Sothillis fits an Ogre more in my eyes. Now that I told my players of that fact though, they would not take it seriously if I changed it back to Sythillis. It's rather hard to make an NPC seem imposing and dangerous when he is named after a sexually transmited disease :) |

Truth be told, I never once stopped to think about that when I'd named the ogre mage back in LOI. I just wanted a sinister and sibilant name to go with my burly monster menace, that's all.
And I'd never heard that was the reason for the name change until now (as I'd never gotten an answer on the name change, so far as I remember).

Funny fact on the name change :) Well I suppose I will downsize the scorpionfolk to my best estimate of a CR 4. What a vast change they made to the numbers of Sothillis' forces -from almost 100,000 to less than 3,000. I think I will lean more towards the 2 ED numbers to add a more epic feel to the campaign. I think it a good idea. The idea of a race give a counter attack against the abuses suffered in the hands of an alien nation is very good (and an excellent oportunity to throw some devious campaigns plots in the mix )
And lady Fathomlin is right about the change in the name of the ogre army. |

I have to agree...but that's coming from someone who's had the whole Sythillisian problem taken care of in her Realms, anyway.

When we have two sourcebooks with some problem of information like this, the most recent (Power of Faerun) is view as the "correct".
But feel free to shape the ogre army to fit your campaign the best way.  |

Well, you may want to be cautious - in terms of raw power, Scorpionfolk are a CR 7, while Stingers are CR 4. |

The entry tells us that "an entire stinger hive-city has used a three-year ritual to transport itself into the Underdark beneath the nation of Amn."
That should give you an idea of troop numbers.

Thank you all very much. I own Power of Faerun, but had not thought of looking through the old edition downloads at WotC, they have helped me many a time. Yes it's sometimes confusing when they switch the names around a bit (Syth to Soth). Another question I have for anyone else who owns Power of Faerun: I noticed the number of troops our Ogre Mage friend controls greatly differ from PoF to Lands of Intrigue ; Anyone have an idea of which seems more accurate? I think for the stingers I will use scorpionfolk from the MM2, as I do not -to my dismay- have Monsters of Faerun. Does the write-up in MoF have actual information on the stinger attacks in Amn ? The 2e Lands of Intrigue boxed set introduced this plot development. The FRCS didn't expand upon it because that's not what the FRCS was out to do. Power of Faerūn updates the Sythilissan situation.
And see Empires of the Shining Sea, which reveals a little about the syl-pasha of Calimshan's machinations relating to the whole situation.
The stinger infiltration comes from the tlincalli write-up in Monsters of Faerūn.

And just as a note, the original name for the army was "Sythsillian", not "Sothsillian". Use whatever name you prefer, though. |
