So I've got a ranger that's been running around in the same suit of leather armor since he was first level. He's now 12th.
Obviously over a career the armor has been re-fashioned several times.
I recently tried to talk the DM into providing some bonus to protection or the like for the armor. However he flatly refused, as apparently you need a wizard to infer magical abilities in his game...

None the less, I made this description (In BG style for kicks) of the leather armor, and thought I would post it here to get some feedback.

Bracers, rings, boots, Elven chain. In part it depends on Edition, however it also depends on DM.

AC 8, that is bad in any Edition that I recall.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

The lore is very interesting and I like the look. Though I'm sure you can have a wizard enchant the leather suit to be a +2 or a +3, espically at 12th level. How aren't the monsters hitting you all the time is beyond me however.

Well the Wizard hides behind the "tin cans",Those of the party that have metal armor.

That can be a problem in 2nd only a Wizard or a Priest can enhance armor. AC8 in 2nd is very bad, is there a Dex penalty?

No penalty. With the leather and a few other trinkets his ac is 4. Combined with the stoneskin, he does alright. However yes, you are correct. Only a wizard can enhance things to that degree. Though, as a DM i don't agree with that.

If you're not running an all human party, a dwarven forge priest (a 2nd Ed kit) can create such armor.

Agreed with Gouf, you can always hire master craftsmen and spellcrafters to rework or customize or enchant the armor piece any way you like (and can afford). You might attempt to circumlocutively manipulate your DM into somehow emphasizing/upgrading your precious suit of armor in some upcoming adventure; even the most unsavvy DM will realize your project is important to you once you announce your initiative to NPCs by spending (or offering) large sums of gold. Surely even the most reclusive and exclusive master armorer in the land will at least find time to send an apprentice to hear more about the eccentric Lord of Daggerfalls wishing to spend a mountain of gold decorating his personal armor?

I recommend reading the signature item skill presented in DUNGEON MASTER OPTION: HIGH-LEVEL CAMPAIGNS. You may also find the steal enchantment spell in the TOME OF MAGIC worth considering, since it could allow useful dweomers to be transferred to your chosen armor piece.

You could also try buying your DM a copy of Weapons of Legacy.

Or the next time you're in a city, just start looking around for magical armors until the DM gives in and lets you have one..... >:D

The signature item looks promising. I may bring this up in game. However there is access to a master armorer in our campaign just outside of daggerfalls. I think with some convincing I can garner some sort of enhancement at eagles eyrie.
