Character
Description and History
Talen is a novice adventurer, and he is well aware of this fact.
He wants to prove himself to the Harpers and is secretly afraid
that he will fail them somehow and never be accepted as a full member.
Talen has a strong sense of duty to the Harper cause and his fingers
twitch at the prospect of danger. When he is afraid, his fear feeds
his adrenaline and brings out an unbeatable will to survive.
He is happiest when in the wilderness, and it is there that his
skills and his natural leadership come to the fore. He loves being
close to the forest and has a great love and protectiveness towards
all things in Nature.
Even at rest, he is a ball of energy, fidgeting nervously. He often
crafts arrows unconsciously and if he is confined to a closed space,
he paces nervously like a cat. When in a conversation with one person
or a small group, Talen is very articulate, displaying a witty sense
of humor and a talent for subtle sarcasm, but will often make social
blunders, especially around beautiful women. For some reason, Talen
is extremely attracted to raven haired women with blue eyes. If
he has to address a large group of people, Talen blushes like a
schoolboy, stutters or babbles incessantly, sometimes doing all
three at once.
He is a devout worshipper of Mielikki and also pays attention to
the tenets of Solonor Thelandira, the elven god of archery.
Talen was born in the Greycloak Hills to an Elven warrior and a
Human druid. There were always many children, both human and elven
around, and one might assume that this is where Talen got his beginnings
as a warrior, if not a ranger. Unlike most half-elves, Talen has
accepted and embraced his dual heritage, taking pride in what each
has to offer. He learned the art of crafting bows and arrows from
his father and from his mother he learned to love Nature and things
in it.
After leaving home and becoming a ranger in his own right, Talen
decided to seek adventure in the Dalelands, knowing the closeness
of the ruins of Myth Drannor would be in need of scouting. While
travelling to the Elven Woods, Talen had what he calls a holy vision.
In this vision, Mielikki appeared to him and instructed him to craft
a longbow, one that would ?grow in power as the wielder grows. So
long as he is true to My word, it will not fail him? Talen took
a full year, finding the perfect tree with which to carve the bowshaft
from. Once the shaft was carved, the ranger took another six months,
carving the symbol of Mielikki above the grip of the longbow, and
etching it with mithral dust.
When the bow was finally finished, he strung it, nocked an arrow
and took aim at a target he had set up. The arrow flew with an accuracy
that the best elven archer would be hard pressed to match. Talen
dropped to his knees and gave thanks to Mielikki, swearing that
he would never fail in his duties as a ranger. To seal his oath,
his drew his hunting knife and cut his palm, letting his own blood
flow into the bow. When the cut was healed, Talen gathered his belongings
and set off again in search of adventure.
