Character
Description and HistoryKeltrich is
a member of the Uthgardt, or northern barbarian tribes. His father, Kremvardt, was a
berserker, as was his older brother Koltvar. He wasn't an ordinary Uthgardt, however. He
isn't as big as most barbarians (but is still in good shape) and was very intelligent as a
youth. He preferred to outwit opponents rather than outmuscle them, and would sneak behind
many adversaries and backstab them. He killed many members of his own tribe and blamed it
on marauding goblins, and took whatever treasure they had. This, however, wasn't enough
for him.
One day, the tribe learned of a lair of goblins and decided to eliminate them. They
sent Koltvar, and Keltrich volunteered to go along. The brothers killed the goblins, but
Koltvar was gravely injured. Keltrich killed his brother, hid the goblin's treasure, and
carried his brother's body back. He later went with another group to destroy a frost
giant. There were 4 others with him. Two of them were killed by the giant. After the giant
was killed, Keltrich backstabbed the barbarian with the least injuries then finished off
the other one with his twin short swords. He gathered the treasure from the giant, and
found a short sword in a burned out troll corpse in the back of the giant's lair. On the
pommel was the inscription Trollbane. He used this sword instead of one of his mundane
swords. He left the lair, and didn't return to his tribe. He traveled around the North,
looking for treasure. He acquired many rare objects during his travels, and earned enough
money to buy a small house in Icewind Dale. He put his treasures here, including a suit of
Elven Chain Mail, Chain Mail of Blending, many items useful to mages or priests, and much
money. He kept the house well locked while he travelled and soon had a small fortune. One
of the items he found was a ring with a small diamond skull on it. He wore this ring
always. While he was sleeping in a small town, he was awakened by many screams from
villagers. He rushed out of the inn to find seven giant skeletons with huge spears
attacking villagers. He was cornered with some other villagers by three of the skeletons.
He fought with them and managed to destroy one, but he was not strong enough to finish the
rest off. He was stabbed and left for dead. He awoke to a warm sensation on his finger.
The ring was glowing. He took the ring to a wizard and had it identified as a Ring of
Regeneration. It helped him many times throughout his career. After the skeleton incident,
Keltrich was fascinated by the undead. He kept imagining the power he would posess if he
could control the undead. He kept hearing of attacks by undead on villages in the area,
and he observed one attack and followed the skeletons and zombies to a small keep. He
waited for morning, then entered the keep. He was met by an old man in black robes. The
man asked him what he wanted there, and Keltrich replied that he wanted to learn
necromancy. He persuaded the necromancer to teach him his art with a Ring of Spell Storing
that he had plucked from a treasure hoard. Keltrich was an extremely fast learner, and
quickly learned many spells. He would learn the necromantic spells first, then learn
attack spells. He then filled his spellbook with whatever spells appeared to be
potentially useful. He spent many years in the keep, learning from the evil Drakkan. After
he learned a particularly difficult spell, he would be tested by Drakkan and sent to
destroy whatever Drakkan knew was lurking about. Eventually, he sensed he was nearing the
time to leave. Drakkan sensed this, too, and gave him one final test: to kill an adult
dragon. Drakkan knew of a red dragon, and told Keltrich where the lair was. Keltrich left
to kill this dragon. He snuck into the lair while he thought the dragon was sleeping, but
he was wrong. The dragon opened his maw and shot a blast of flame at Keltrich. He felt a
sensation on his hand, similiar to his Ring of Regeneration, but it was a simple gold ring
he had found that was glowing. He didn't feel heat from the dragon's flames. He then cast
a lightning bolt spell at the dragon, and the two fought each other for what seemed like
hours. Both combatants were severely weakened, but Keltrich's wounds healed from his ring
while the dragon's did not. But the dragon's attacks disrupted many of Keltrich's spells
and damaged him many times. Finally, Keltrich had one spell left and cast it. His hand
started to glow, and he laid it on the dragon's hide. He felt the dragon's body weaken
while he felt stronger. Finally, the dragon fell down at his feet. He had drained him of
all his life force. He found much money, bracers, a black cloak, and a unique sword in the
dragon's lair. The sword's handle was made of red dragon hide, and had a huge ruby set
into the pommel. He kept this sword and the rest of the dragon's money, and made his way
back to Drakkan's keep. Drakkan told him that it was time for him to leave, before they
start to quarrel. Keltrich pretended to go and pack his things, but really waited for
Drakkan to settle down then snuck into his chamber and stabbed him with both of his
swords. Drakkan managed to severely injure Keltrich, but Keltrich didn't let him cast
spells by stabbing him with his swords. He finished Drakkan off with the same spell that
killed the dragon. He left the keep and moved back to Icewind Dale. Every once in a while,
he raised a small army of undead to harass the people living there. Some adventurers found
out about this and tried to kill him. They would have suceeded if it weren't for his Ring
of Regeneration. They left him for dead and fled his small house. He now spends his time
researching new spells and plotting his revenge on the heroes. |
