For the campaign I'm setting up on Paizo (yes, it's PF1e), I recently decided that there are three places I'd like to start with. I'm looking for opinions on these three places for Heroic Fantasy type adventures. While all the realms are ripe for Heroic Fantasy type adventures, I'd like your opinion on these three.
The Vilhon Reach. This first place I picked happened to be the Yuan-ti's stronghold in the Realms. I figured that the melding of snake DNA with human DNA (don't ask how it happened, it just did) happened somewhere in the Vilhon Reach. If I picked this place, I would be starting the PCs here. Most likely with a Yuan-ti patron. Although, Serpent Kingdoms goes into details on how the Yuan-ti got started, I'll be using the 2e accessory Vilhon Reach for details on this part of Faerun.
The Old Empires. I'd also wondered that the Old Empires of Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther would be a good place to start a campaign. Mulhorand is based on New Kingdom Egypt (probably the 19th Dynasty). While Unther is based on Mesopotamia (probably Chaldean era). And Chessenta was based on Classical Greece. Here, I can have heroic fantasy adventures as well, plus I have the Old Empires 2e accessory describing both places.
Shadowdale. I came back here, round circle. I have the 2e Grey Box, with Shadowdale listed. The place is an interesting setting for adventures, and I could run a whole campaign in Shadowdale if I wanted to.
These three areas I'm wondering for a Heroic Fantasy campaign. Of these three, which are you wondering is the best?

It may be best to describe what you mean by heroic fantasy campaign. Do you mean as opposed to a more Sword and Sorcery feel? Many feel that Pathfinder (and to a lesser extent 3.5) by default equates to heroic fantasy. |

I'd go Chessenta/Unther (I'd personally leave Mulhorand more or less alone). Chessenta is huge, has a war-like population and several power groups between it and Unther to make use of for a campaign. It's also been largely left alone so you can pretty much do what you want without stepping on too much cannon, if that sort of thing bothers you. |
I have a dream that one day, all game worlds will exist as one. |

Canon, or not, I wanted a different place other than the Dalelands when I was thinking of a campaign in the Forgotten Realms. I like the Realms, actually. And I do like the Old Empires' setting along with it. That's why I bought the pdf. |
