Hail and well met, good scribes,

I've been playing D&D for more than four decades now, but I have been a stranger to the Forgotten Realms, having played only in homebrew settings and Greyhawk. For "reasons," I decided late last fall that I would move our campaign to the Sword CoastÑWaterdeep in particularÑand I transported our most beloved fourth tier characters there from Greyhawk for an epic adventure in order to inaugurate the changeover.

I already had the SCAG and nearly all of the official 5e Forgotten Realms modules at that point, and I have been a busy boy buying reams old material and reading up on our new milieu. So far I have read most of the 1e-3.5 content for the region, and I'm preparing to spiral outward into adjacent areas like the Heartlands, the the Moonsea lands, Anauroch, and the Lands of Intrigue (and I'm working up the courage to brave the 4e resources).

Thus far, I'm fascinated and impressed with what I've read about the Realms and I couldn't be happier with the decision to relocate our campaign(s). There is a lot of information to absorb, obviously, but I'm enjoying the research, and I'm making plans to begin a new homebrew campaign using the setting for a band of first-level characters whom we'll roll up in the coming weeks. I've also joined three campaigns on Roll20 so that I can experience the Realms firsthand as a player.

I look forward to "meeting" you all and asking you the questions that have been fermenting in my brain since I've embarked on this adventure.

Cheers!

Welcome to Candlekeep!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have... A lot of us have been Realms fans for years, and we know a thing or three about the setting. Plus, we've got some of the authors and creators here!

As for the rest of us, we are friendly, mostly harmless, and occasionally strange... Enjoy your stay!

The old material is better for lore (I personally recommend the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Guide). 5e tends to be sparse on detail, and seems to change things on a dime. You can of course use books like the SCAG for "current" things, but the meat of the lore is in the older stuff, imho, if you telly want to dive in.
