greetings,

My group are now in Anauroch where they will find an archeologic site where a group is trying to find stuff from the Netherese culture (low Netheril). They are looking after a magic item that is unfortunally not in the old ruin anymore (spoiler --> about a few years i'm going to lead a FR adventure where I use the rod of the seven partw in it. The characters here find information about it and later my players new character will get involved)

At the moment my players are:

Grace: aasimar sorceress level 10
Iskar: druid level 8
a human barbarian/beserker (deities and demigods) level 10
a halfling psion level 10
(for the readers of my journal, I know there are new characters here and a few old left ;)

My question is what cool traps and monsters can I put here that can be relevant? I was thinking about magical traps and even a trapped phaerimm that will try to persuade the characters to set him free?

anyone a few good idea's (not only hack & slash)

thanks in advantage :)

Ah, a topic close my my campaign

Random thoughts follows:

Ancient religions? Tyche and Kozah comes to mind.
Ancient magic as treasures? Blast sceptres.
Ancient monsters: battle horrors, lich phaerimm, ash giants (death giants). Shar-related shadow creatures seem fashionable these days.

Lets say the shadovar has this particular ruin on their to-do list, and hastily send an excavation team once the characters trigger an alarm. I imagine the Zhentarim also watch netherese ruins with great interest. The Shattered Peaks group also come to mind.

just a few random thoughts as well:

- a tribe of bedine might show up, discover the use of magic (they HATE magic!) and decide to attack

- a sandstorm blasts the area. is it a natural one or is there someone not liking the excavation to make progress?

- a zhentish caravan stumbles upon the excavation, about the same military power as the archeologists. battle or negotiation?

- a blue dragon attacks. and then another. :)

- harpers show up and try to dissuade the excavators from digging any further with gloomy predictions about setting free ancient evil. in truth, it is a magically disguised lamia who wants to see herself what the ruins hold. the bedine tribe (see above) is under her control and attacks should the harper-ruse fail.

thanks for the nice idea's. I made plans to use the bedine tribe as well and I was thinking about tge shattered peaks too but I think I don't gonna use the last one. the zhentish caravan or the shadovar are a great idea too. Just have to think which one I will take. I don't know a lot about the shadovar :(

Lost Empires of Faerun has the PrC of the “Cult of the Shattered Peak”, a highly secretive society whose members are direct descendants of the Netherese. They want all secrets of Netheril to remain buried, and they actively pursuit all who try to unearth (probably dangerous) artifacts or ruins. Quite possible that they show up and try to discourage your party from continuing with their plans ...

*edit* I am getting quite old and lame lately ... *sob*

you might have handled this already but as a late answer you could reveal the low netherese ruins to be rather disappointing... and rather well, ruined. the part they do find could be in fact a ruin of a later culture which they mistake for netherese. This might be useful if your players change their agendas and want to move to a different area or focus (the ruins relate tothat other culture). if they do find potent magical ruins have some of the wards malfunction etc. magic having been corrupted over the ages. it would be neat to stumble upon a group of golems (extremely high cr) and have them disagree on how to respond eventually fighting eachother. the real difficulty of the conflict is avoiding being drawn into their fight and moving on past them. also, you could have a situtation that seems hopeless but really has already been overcome(ex: "you need the key ofwhaoriudhs to pass" and the doorway they are afraid to pass has no wards. the door that once stood there did, in the past, however).

let us know what you came up with either way !

The Anauroch adventure book has trips to Synod and Oreme. Can't get much gooder than that if you want a "search the ruins" adventure!
