Not only did I like how the war was worked into the story earlier, by "flashing forward," but I like the idea that we further get to see the aftermath in the form of the refugees in the Howling Delve. The scene with Varan and Meisha really conveyed Varan's madness, especially when he was eating the maggot ridden meat, and the description of the state of his robes. Its not uncommon to have a character described as being insane, but it usually isn't illustrated quite so vividly.
It just struck me that in this section we have the full circle update of all of the characters with their "parents" as adults. In the last section, Kall met up with his father, and in this one we see the state of Aazen's and Meisha's respective parents as well. I liked that Meisha was torn between what Varan's current state was and the fact that he wanted to reach out to her.
I liked Morgan, Learin, and Cesira's banter at the party, and I'm starting to become more interested in Dantane as well. I liked the comparison of how magic stood out at the party as opposed to a similar affair in Waterdeep. |

Indeed, I actually found that description to be both sad and frightening. The horror in this novel is on the subtle side, and I like that (that is, just under the surface). I also like all the imperfect characters--Meisha is likeable but has a temper, Kall seems decent but also doesn't seem like he's that much better than his father at times (with his threats towards that one old enemy, although they were arguably justified).

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams." --Richard Greene (letter to Time) |
