This may sound strange, considering the name of this forum/site, but where can I find the best/most info on Candlekeep itself? Is there a map of the place somewhere? Are there any 3e sources?

Any help is appreciated - Thanks, Mark

I learned everything I need to know about Candlekeep from Baldur's Gate

...others may prefer Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast. Unfortunately Volo provided no maps. I do not recall any 3e sources.

Candlekeep has largely been skimmed over in printed Realmslore... However, we do have a good description from Ed himself:

Hmmm... didn't Baldur's Gate (the computer game) also have a map with a heraldic device/coat of arms for several cities or places on the Sword Coast - Candlekeep included? I was wondering if these coats of arms are official or developed by the game designers?

Perhaps there is such a map. I looked through my stuff, but found none. I found the Icewind Dale and BGII maps, but not BG.
Bioware was in the habit of releasing special preorder editons of their games so who knows...

I have a scan of of a map looking like the in-game map from Baldur's Gate:Tales of the Sword Coast with french labels I've found somewhere on the internet. No coat-of-arms however.

... hmmmm time to reinstall these classics.

The map really contains a lot of coat of arms - but I think you wouldn't count Bioware, Black Isle, and TSR as anywhere near Baldurs Gate

Their are six named coats, the above mentioned and Iron Throne, Volo, and Flaming Fist on the bottom of the map. In the above center there ist the one from Baldurs Gate and finally their are 18 unnamed ones.

Candlekeep is covered in Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast. Ed's also discussed a little about the library in his compiled replies here. The 1e and 2e FR boxed sets also cover Candlekeep. As well, the early chapters of Ed's and Elaine's CoS novel. And DRAGON #255 -- this article is based on the treatment of Candlekeep in the Baldur's Gate CRPG, which isn't completely canonical (though the BG novels are)... the information presented in the article however is fairly decent and is likely not to be contradicted in the near future.

Also, Ed's "Introduction to Candlekeep", which was specially written for this site, touches on it as well. It can be found here:- http://www.candlekeep.com/library/articles/ck_scroll.htm

Oh, and DRAGON #255 provided a map of Candlekeep based on the events of the BG games.

Hmmm. Trust not THOSE maps. Ed's intro, on this site, is as good as we have regarding the layout thus far (plus the relevant Wyrm of the North article Ed wrote).
love,

Wise advice, as always, my Lady. Which is why I used Ed's layout details in the "Candlekeep Intro" to craft my own personal [and deliberately rough] map for Candlekeep.

Well met

Aye, I pretty much disregard any of the maps and such from Baldur's Gate etc. and they don't give anywhere near the representation of Candlekeep from previous lore (what little there is).

Ed's "Introduction" is just perfect

Thanks All. I suppose 'adding' a little something would be out of the question, then?

It wouldn't effect the keep proper, but it is semi-important to something I'm working on.

I don't want to start a completely different thread, but I always have more questions -

Does anyone happen to know the 'western name' for the A-Ling Shan - those mountains that Khazari and Ra-Khati are located in. I just read it somewhere the night before last, but since I'm referencing about 12 different tomes right now I can't remember where I read it.

I believe they are called the "Sword-something", but thats all I remember. I really need to take better notes.

The maps and such from the Baldur's Gate CRPG may not be perfect, but I thought the feel that the game evoked was wonderful, and was part of what got me into the Realms. Besides, I think it's neat how the protagonist was raised within the library's walls--how many people get to say that?

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."

That would be me.

And it does exist -- in a way. Though, I don't particularly care for the accusation suggesting otherwise, Beir. The reason I've been so lax in handing it over to Big Al is largely because of what I said back in June [see above]. My own map is deliberately "rough," and would likely only be of use to me, for the most part, since I've tinkered a little with Ed's basic description in order to promote my own view of Candlekeep for my FR campaigns.
