just finished elminister in hell and was wondering if halaster is sane now, he was sane for a little bit when he first got power from mystra and she is obviously not mad at him so what do you think sane or still nutty as a fruit cake

Mod edit: Retitled thread again with more spoiler notification.

Yes, I have plans for Halaster! Yes, he's less insane than he was, but please remember that none of the Chosen are what we would call "sane."

Ed has discussed Halaster and the events that took place after that novel. It's in his replies... probably from 2004 and 2005 more then 2006 and 2007.

We knew Halaster could slip back into his periods of insanity every now and then... but it was nothing compared to what he experienced before the purging of the influence from Shar.

Ok sadly I'm waiting to read "El in Hell" till after I read "The Annotated Elminster Collector's Edition". So if it would not be to hard to sum up what did Shar have to do with his loss of sanity?

The party come to a town befallen by hysteria

Rogue: So what's in the general store?
DM: What are you looking for?
Rogue: Whatevers in the store.
DM: Like what?
Rogue: Everything.
DM: There is a lot of stuff.
Rogue: Is there a cart outside?
DM: (rolls) Yes.
Rogue: We'll take it all, we may need it for the greater good.

Basically, Shar ensured Halaster's insanity by filling him with the use of the Shadow Weave, and derived other ways to drive him toward the point of insanity.

And given Gelcur's comments... I decided to add a further spoiler about Halaster's status from Elminster in Hell.

I agree.

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."
