Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could give me some help:
I'm going to play a 4 months campaign based in the Shaar with only Centaurs PC. It is an interesting idea, wich I discussed with the players, but for me as a master it means a lot of work because now I need to search for lore concerning this Race.
Where should I go to look for? I have found something in 3/3.5 sources, but I'm sure there some in older books.

There is not to much information on the race in the Realms products that I can think of. Races of Faerun of course, but I imagine you have read that. I think there is something in the Cormanthor part of the Elminsters Ecology book from 2ed.
Other centaur sources that I can think of is The Tales of the Wee folk for the OD&D game, the Complete Book of Humanoids for the 2ed., A long article in Dragon in the early 80's (sorry I cant remember the exact issue). There is also (I think) The Slayers Guide to Centaurs from Mongoose press, but I have not been in contact with this. |

And there we have it, Dragon 103, published in '85. Thanks Wooly.
Its comprehensive although it focuses on the centaur as a woodlands being, as do most of the other sources. The problem with this article is of course availability, unless you have the Dragon magazine archive. |

The Shining South has a small bit about the centaurs of the Shaar, but not much (pg. 163). Another option that you might consider for the Shaar, is for them to play Wemics.

That's true. In the small book about Cormanthor they are mentioned. I remember that they lived a nomadic livestyle and that they follow the same route year after year. |

There is a large centaur sub-culture in Thay, who do not behave like your typical centaurs. They usually are overseers of the Zulkirs slave plantations. They are far more metroplitan then your typical Sylvan version, and alignment-wise they should be neutral at best. There are some idications in Novels and older sources that the Centaurs have lived there long before the coming of the Mulhorandi, and had adapted to living with, rather then fighting, the invaders.
It might be interesting to have some sort of dynamic going on with the Shaar Centaurs - perhaps they were all one group once and they became split apart by the Mulan and Imaskar entering the region. Maybe your group has been 'quested' to find their lost kin, and lead them back along the 'true path' (whatever that may be). |

One a side note there is also the eastern steppe centaur detailed in the Horde-box for 2ed.
There is of course the demihuman centaurs from one of the Monster Annuals (unsure where they appeared first), but these, like most other subspecies detailed in other worlds have no official place in the realms. |

Found a juicy little tidbit today -
I was going through my Ex's attic, looking for stuff I might have left behind, and I came across a few shoeboxes with Dragon magazines. Considering the current state of the mag, I felt fortunate indeed to have these back amongst the others. 
Anyhow, I came across a WONDERFUL article by Ed concerning the lost kingdom of Athalantar (the Kingdom of the Stag) in issue #228, and there was a page or two with a timeline describing surrounding realms. -
232 DR - Year of the Leeping Centaur:
In Andlath, centaur herds break free of human slavery in Andlath, shattering that realm into small besieged territories.
It mentions earlier in the article that Andlath was a human nation located in the area of the Shining Plains, that had built the great road connecting the Sword Coast with the Vilhon Reach.

| Well, there's the centaurs of Thay (see previous poster's info, as it probably would make for an interesting thing if say the wizard centaur is a Thayan centaur who fled after trying to teach himself magic from his master's spellbook... just an idea). Then, there's a tribe of centaurs in the woods near Rawlinswood and Impiltur. These centaurs came to the aid of the Cormyreans against the horde during Azoun's Crusade about 15 years back (I forget what they did, but I noted them being there). |

I forgot about those!
And the Horde novels were one of my favorite series.
Going through some old Monstrous Compendium entries and found tribes of 'Desert Centaurs' in Zakhara.
It would appear that Centaurs are all over the Realms since time immemorial, but they have chosen to remain in the background for the most part.
I don't know the CK rules for spoilers, but there is also a 'new' group (sort of) in the High Moor now, as of the events inBlackstaff. If you do go with the above poster's idea for a Centaur mage, the same would probably work coming from this group as well.
Hmmmm... you know...I wonder how these 'new' Centaurs feel about what has happened to their brethren in Thay. Could have the basis for a campaign right there....

Yeah, it would be interesting if they had ever visited the eastern inner sea prior to the Mulan people moving in, and perhaps they left some of their number behind to protect something. Over the years they forgot about it what with having to defend themselves from gnolls, etc....
