I think you are confused about some concepts and definitions.

I don't think i am confused at all. And your exemple just precise what i was trying to explain with some difficulties.
quote:
I never took a proficiency that he could not have learned for in-game reasons

With regrets, i am in the obligation to say : you are not a powergamer .
You are typicaly not in the duality i was trying to explain. You consider that "who is your character ?" come from a mix between who you wish it would be and who the game lead him to be.
It is not a powergamer attitude. You make confusion, in my point of view (i precise), between two things ; optimization and powergaming. Or this things are not identical. You tipicaly are in a process of optimization of the present that i tried to describe. You do the better you can with what you have, and you have considered that what you have is for part what you want and for another part what the game content you play give to you by influencing you. A powergamer don't care of influence of game content, he/she only want his/her character to be what he/she wants to be. That's why, we can obtain something like your fighter (optimized as you can, with the limits you impose to yourself) and multi-classed things totaly out of game control.

Optimization is not in all cases powergaming. In a RPG everybody optimize even roleplayers if you consider that optimization is trying to do the better with what you have at disposition. Powergaming consist in optimzation too, but at more important degree cause this optimization process concern present and future. As a powergamer want his/her character only be what he want, he can project himself in his future.

To try explain better, an exemple. In your case (the exemple of your fighter) if you have to do an other fighter in another campaign content the probability you will obtain a stricly identical character is very low. Why ? Cause, in the construction process of your character, you have integrated a part which is totaly dependant of the campaign content. If the two campaigns (the old and the new) don't have the same content, your two characters will be different in a lot of aspects. For a powergamer, that is not the case. As the game content has a influence on character build near to zero, the probability that the two characters will be very close is important (same characterization, same over efficient feats, just perhaps a little difference in prestige class but not even sure).

As you begin a campaign just ask you something. What will look like my character after 1 month of playing the content, two months ? What will it look like at level 5, level 10, Level 15 ? If you simply say, sorry i cannot answer your question cause from part it will depend of what happen to him/her in the game content ; you are not a powergamer. By opposition a powergamer can plan the character at each step of his/her evolution. All the process named "building" is under control, under his/her control exclusively (no influence of game content). He know exactly the "template" at within the point, at level 5, 10 or 15. Ya you can argue that it doesn't exist ; be sure it exists, less and less today in traditionnal RPGs cause powergaming find a new kingdom named MMOG (even if WoTC with the tons of content on new feats and prestige class dont enough take this in account in my opinion).

I hope, with this precisions that you will understand that what you blame in my argument dont concern my point of view. All what you say concern a duality that doesn't exist between roleplay and optimization and for sure (and i aggree with you) you conclude that this duality does not exist. This is not the same thing between roleplay and powergaming.
